Im curious as to how others feel about shop assistants telling off your kids when they touch things.
Tonight we were trying to get Addisons passport photo taken, which i might add was a complete nightmare but thats a whole other story. Anyway while i was dealing with her kobe found some boxes and starting drumming on them and i straight away can out of the doorway and told him to stop at the same time an assistant yelled from the other end of the shop for him to stop it and leave them alone, in a really nasty tone. I can understand if they are damaging something and the parent just ignored them but it was only a matter of seconds later that i told him to stop plus she knew the trouble i was having with Addison, you could hear her screaming through the whole shop and it was the second night we had tried to get the photo taken or she could have actually come and said something nicely to him like please dont do that. To be honest i was really mad, probably cos i was stressed but Im still fuming quietly about it.

Funny I was just ranting about this yeterday (after coming across the world's worst checkout girl who immediately told Ella off for doing her supermarket ritual: reach from my trolley into the one you're packing so I can push and pull it a whole inch either way until mum shifts me away). It's never been a problem before, because I shift her to stop it, but this girl snapped straight away!
I think if kids are looking to damage stock in a shop then it's quite alright (albeit embarrassing) for staff to intervene, but certainly in a more polite way than the assistant you mentioned did. I go to the chemist so much for Ella that the staff there know us, and they've seen her being a right little... hmmmm, how to say it nicely... ratbag while we're waiting, and waiting, and waiting - I don't get to sit for a minute, and she tears around the shop touching everything, and I can't hold her. So one of the staff asked me if she could have a lollipop, and spent a little time chatting to her about that - now that's good customer service!

Definitely not yelling. Maybe the assistant was having a bad afternoon full of screamers  I think it would be appropriate in your situation to call the manager and say what happened and that you would have preferred the assistant to come say something to either you or Kobe, not yelling out like that.

I don't think I ever told someone's kids off when I was working retail, how inappropriate! I'd be more inclined to say something to the parents, but if it was the situation that you described Robyn and you were obviously busy and stressed, I'd try and find something to distract him.

I did say to her excuse but i just told him to stop (he did stop straight away but cos he was drumming it took him a second to hear me) and she just kind of giggled and walked the other way. silly cow.... wish i had of said more

I agree, I never told anyone's child off - and I worked for JK so had plenty kids in and out of our store everyday.

do yyou remeber a "work story" thread i had about this foul mouthed toddler who broke things? anyway I never told him off and if i can hold my temper againest that horrible kid - anyone can hold their temper againest Kobe doingf something as minor as you describe. biarch

I might be inclined to "help" a stressed mum by goin up to the little guy and saying "leave that alone sweetie and come and play with the toys over here" or something like that.

Yeah, its so easy to be nice about it! When I was working in the children's bookshop we'd try to direct the 'seek and destroy' kids to the play corner and if that didn't work we'd nicely ask their parents to keep an eye on them.
Its just wrong and mean to yell at other people's children! Especially when they're just having fun, not deliberately wrecking stuff!

fewww so its not just me then. Maybe the service is just really bad there. Thinking back even last night when we tried the passport photo the lady didnt even attempt to help us distract addison, just stood there waiting and getting grumpy then when i walked in she was standing there and someone else came up and asked if she could help and i said i wanted to try to get a passport photo please another lady said oh shes the wee girl who screamed last night isnt she, such and such can help you! I actually felt like i was being a pain in the arse but since im running out of time to get the passport in I had to try.

I agree, you should make a complaint, that was completly uncalled for..
If someone tells Caitlyn off and i think its unjustified , i have this certain tone of voice i use.....I always get an embarrassed "sorry mam" afterwards, and i think "hehehe ..they called me mam"

I think it's uncalled for. I wouldn't have a problem if Miss M was doing something totally unnoticed by us and the assistant politely distracted her. However yelling before the parent even has a chance to intervene to me is over the top.I wouldn't like that at all!

I told a few children off when working in retail - I found that if they come in and smash things on the floor, the parents generally dont like paying for what the child has broken. Most children were great and would put stuff back/down gently but the few that would drop stuff on the floor... ugh. I've never yelled, but some were told sternly but nicely to back away from the stock!

I would be sooo mad!!
I worked in retail while I was in uni and I never yelled at any one specially children!
If some one yelled at Zaara (even tho I follow her around shops and she is actually really good by not touching) I would bite her head off!!
Then after I was finished chewing on her head I would complain to the manager!!
