I would any advice from all the experienced mums out there! I am really keen to use cloth nappies when our bubs arrives although so many poeple keep telling me I am mad! Has anyone else experienced using cloth nappies on new borns and if so how did they find it and what brands worked well? I have noticed on the other threads that a lot of people seem to be using the cloth nappies as the babies get older? Any advice would be great!

Hi! My daughter Hannah is almost 5 months and we have been using cloth basically since day 1. For the first 6 weeks or so I used a combination of fuzzi bunz, traditional flats and covers, and disposables. Found Fuzzis to be the best so started to use just those. Its great to use it from day 1, only thing is in those first few weeks you are really tired and you have to wash the nappies, but you will be doing other washing anyway. Have a look on www.thenappynetwork.org.nz lots of cloth info

Oh yeah, and the other thing with newborns in cloth is that they tend to grow quite quickly so they might outgrow the small sizes fast.

You can get newborn hire kits, which have an assortment of fitteds, covers, and pockets for you to try. Check out www.thenappynetwork.org.nz and www.greenbeans.co.nz for more info

Hi Angel,
Where on the Nappy Network did you see the "newborn hire kits"? I can't find it.

thanks guys, thats so helpful! The biggest complaint seems to be the runny poo with newborns - but I take it you guys didn't have issues with that? I have a friend who used cloth (terry) until her girl was moving around. She had trouble with leakage and bulkness once she started walking. What are the best systems to use that will go up to that age? (or do you just buy differnt size covers?) I am a bit clueless with all this as this is my first one and there is just so much choice out there. When was it nappies stopped being just plain old nappies?!

I used plain old nappies with Maya right up until she was TT and probably will again with this bubs - although Gsmum is desperately trying to convert me to fitted cloth

Ok, so I really am clueless!! When you say plain old nappies do you mean the terry or prefold nappies?! Do you need to put covers over them or are they fine on their own? I think maybe I need to go to one off those demonstrations that are on the nappy network!

I'd say go to the demonstrations. I found it hard to get my head around everything (still have no idea - just went with the easiest option!) hehe

Emma meant plain cloth flats. The reeeeal old fashioned ones

Btw Emma - save your sanity, get the new kind

I think the runny poo thing is valid, but to be honest, poos leak from disposables too so I don't think I'd have a problem with that side of things. I'd say the hardest thing is to fit them. But if you use covers with prefolds (that's how it works right?) that would be less of a problem. Then if you wanted to go with a pocket system like Fuzzibunz later on then you can fit her better.

Hope that made a little bit of sense

Toni - in the forum under General Nappy Chat, there is a "sticky" post near the top of the page called HIRE KITS AVAILABLE. Take a look through there I think you will have to register to see it.

Emma - go for fitteds and covers! Or pocket nappies! Your flat nappies wont go to waste they make great pocket nappy stuffers.
