Topic: Questions for Wellington mums... Posted: 12 May 2006 at 10:08am |
As most of you know, we're looking at moving somewhere at the end of the year. WELL... a job at what appears to be a really good school has just been advertised. Its at Onslow College (J'ville) and Nat is quite interested. I've done a bit of reasearch and we could get a place in Newlands within our budget.
My questions are:
1) If you've heard of Onslow College, is it as good as it seems? (It's a decile 10! which is the highest ranking possible! Nat's current job is at a decile 3 school and its tough)
2) What are the primary schools in the Newlands area like? Alternatively, what are the names of the primary schools? (if you don't know much about them) and I'll look them up on one of the MOE's websites.
3) Would a commute from Newlands to the high school (probably about 3 km or so, but crossing the motorway) be too awkward a trip?
Thanks ladies.

Hey Becca, Im not in Welly but was friends with a girl from Onslow. From what I know, it is a bit different to most high schools (not sure if its a good thing or a bad thing!). They dont wear uniform, no prefects/head girl/head boy etc, no dux that kind of thing. That may be of no use at all but thought I'd add my bit! Good luck

Hi Becca,
I went to Newlands College when I lived in Newlands years ago. I don't know alot about Onslow College. I also went to Rewa Rewa primary school in Newlands - I loved this school and the teachers there were all great. It was especially hard for me when I started primary school because our family had moved over from Holland (I was 7 at the time) and they put me straight into standard 1 and I couldn't even speak the language! So I have to say the teachers were very patient with me.

Thanks for your repiles.
Aimee, we know they don't wear a uniform, but the no prefects/head girl/head boy/dux etc is interesting. Did your friend like going there?
Millie, that's the sort of thing I wanted to know! Thanks.

Yeah I think so, but she was one of those popular girls that would have enjoyed any high school! Someone corect me if I'm wrong about the no prefects etc, but I am 99% sure...

I knew some guys about 5 years ago that went to Onslow college a few years before that and I remember they used to rave about how good it was. They were very nice polite and sociable people as I recall Not that that means anything of course, but they definately never mentioned being beat up or anything .

Hey Becca... that's a really nice family friendly area. I'm not sure exactly what the schools are like but really good facilities for kidlets around the place. And the commute wouldn't be a problem at all. Actually perfect!!!
And Ana lives in Newlands... might want to investigate somewhere a bit further away or you'll never get rid of her!

oooh oooh!!! My dad works at Onslow College (the carpenter) he loves it and my little sister just finished 7th form there. Sounds like a good college. It is noooo hassle getting there from newlands - we live in newlands and it is at most a 10 minute drive if that!

Thanks for all your input, ladies
Nat and I talked about it, and we just can't afford to move yet. We may be able to at the end of the year, otherwise it will be at the end of next year... so you'll just have to come and visit me instead!

Absolutely I'll be available! We're planning on going to Tauranga for Queen's Birthday weekend (3/4/5 June), but other than that we'll be home.
Do you prefer a flat white, long black, cappicino, mochacino, latte, or hot chocolate? I'll fire up the coffee machine!

Mmmmmmmm Latte... I'll hold you to that Becca!
Might be travelling with my sis. Will see closer to the time.
And will work around your Queen's B-day trip. Maybe I'll go home just after that. Very excited about all the people I get to meet! And a holiday!!!! Haven't had one of those for a while.

Good thing I've got another packet of coffee in the cupboard! If you're really lucky, I might even do some baking... no promises though...

I went to Rewa Rewa too (1987-1991) - and from what I remember, I loved it. IIRC, it had some of the best facilities of all the schools in the area, and that was way back then.
