that there is an 80% chance of conceiving the same sex next time around with only leaving a 20% chance of the other?
Just wondering, just found this rather interesting.

oh what the ****!? I dont know if i beleive that otherwise there would be more people with kids of all the same sex and only a few with a mix...
I think i kind of believe (even though its a scientifically proven thing!!) that the order and gender is mostly determined by your partners history of family for eg: in my hubbys family there is always a mixture of 2 or more boys and 1 girl going back to his great great grandads family!! and then a friend of mine has a big boy trend in her hubbys family where girls are very scarce and she herself has 3 boys now!!

I think it depends on other circumstances, eg, deep sea divers tend to have girls as the boy sperm seem to die under the pressure, same with RF radio users, the frequency apparently harms the boy swimmers.
Perhaps also as it comes to timing as well, the particular couples that have 2 the same enjoy sex at the same time of month if that makes sense.

hmmm thats a hard one. Not sure i believe it though. My dad who only has one brother no sisters went on to have 5 girls (with 3 different mothers but wont go there) my step father had 3 boys and he was an only child. My hubby obviously had one of each and he has just one sister so history has repeated itself there. I was told that it depends on when you have sex and that theory worked out true for us but not sure i would rely on it for conception.

I watched a documentary about fertility and the gender game a few weeks ago and a theorist has prooved that there is no backing to support Dr Shettles theory for choosing gender according to times you have sex where in fact more than half the couples interviewed who had tried for a certain sex did everything to the T but got the opposite gender.
I do beleive (and so do the scientists apparently) that gender can be affected by things such as deep sea diving as SB mentioned.
Iv read it somewhere else on the net too (im going to try and find it).
In saying that when we first started TTC and we were hoping for a certain gender we did turn to the Dr Shettles method
I guess if there was really an absolute surefire method then it would be widely known and put out there for all...

The deep sea divers I would go along with, who knows what all that pressure does to you but the RF radio users, well not sure about that, my step father has worked with them all his life, all day every day and as i mentioned he only had boys, 3 of them.

Sportsman are more likely to have girls too - not 100% why that effects the sperm, but apparently it can do.
There is a possibility that the womb or vagina can become inhospitable to one type of sperm too (thats where they get the theory about eating acidic versus alkaline for a specific gender). I read somewhere where it can be effected if a woman really, really doesn't want a specific gender, though I am not sure about the truth in that!

sorry skipped reading other replies but I first had a boy then a girl then a boy so I don't beleive it... Its a 50/50 chance anyhow when you look at it.

Going by the Shettles method, sportsmen would have more girls as they would wear supportive underwear and are more likely to get hot down there so it would kill off the 'weaker' male sperm. I think if you're really keen on a certain sex it can't hurt to try a few things but I would say unless there are medical reasons for your 'environment' favouring a certain type of sperm or hubby producing more of one type then most people would be good ol 50/50.

I don't know the statistics, but I have heard the more of one sex you have the more likely that is to continue. (so when we had one girl we had reasonable chances of having another. now that we have three girls our chances of more girls is much higher.) It all sounds like myth really. But... we do have three girls so far.

I can uderstand that busymum though, as there could be something that is making the girl swimmers hit the mark!
The RF radio thing didn't make sense to me, but dh has a colleague who when working with RF radios had girls, when he wasn't, it was boys (he did all sorts of testing and stuff, though not sure exactly, infact maybe it wasn't even RF Radios!)

There was an article in the paper a couple of months ago saying that scientists had found that if the mother works in a testorone filled environment she is more likely to have a boy as her testosterone levels are slightly increased.
So if you work in a boys school, fire, police, building site, mechanics or anywhere that tends to have a higher percentage of males you have a better chance of having a boy.

hmmm the testosterone theory didnt work for me....
I read a NI or WD type article somewhere that said the pretty people (they mentioned courtney cox and angelina etc) were more likely to have girls...ie an attractive couple produces girls...
- im sticking to that theory and sure busy mum will take that one too huh? LOL!!!
will def tell DH about the diving theory tho...he dives a lot and now have a reason to tell him its his own silly fault its not a boy like he wanted! LOL

I wasn't sure if it was true or not so thought I would see what you lovely ladies thought. I didn't know what to think as of course you hear various things and its probably just the luck of the draw anyway.
I did however go through all the friends I knew that had two or more babies and it did seem to come out of more same sex siblings than mixed.
DH has two brothers and his oldest brother had a boy and a girl and his other brother had two boys. We have a boy so will be interesting to see what #2 will be when it happens.

I know its a bit of pot luck but there must be something that determines which flavour you have, whether that is something that can be manipulated is the big question.

Going by looking at friends babies to formualte a theory, y theory would be that a girl first means you are mor elikely to have a boy second, and a boy first makes you more likely to have another boy! (These are RL friends of course, becasue plenty of people on here blow that theory out of the water!)
