Topic: Older kids and jobs around the house. Posted: 28 September 2009 at 9:16am |
Hi there. Just wondering wht jobs kids do to help out at home. My two older kids (10 and 6 yrs) don't do much it seems (on takling to others), they put their clothes away and must help clean up toys and keep their room clean (not that that happens with DD1) But when i was their ages i was doing alot more like helping to cook tea doing dishes. Am i not getting them to do enough or is what i'm doing ok???

its ok if you are happy with it... my kids arent that old yet but am trying to get them into the habit of making their beds... and cant wait till they can peel spuds and dry dishes! the boys are 4 and 5 and they have to tidy their room and help clean up the lounge in the evening and they also help with putting away groceries and lately i get them to put their own clothes away after i have folded them. oh and they help set the table for dinner.

yea its up to you so dont worry. as long as you dont spend all your time picking their stuff up then i think its all good. my sisters boy is 8 and he sets the table gets out everything like butter, salt, knives and forks, sauce etc.. he also puts the plates and stuff on the bench afterwards and the parents cook and put them in the dishwasher. kids could put towels away when they've been folded, wipe tables down. i cant think of other stuff they could do.

We use lots of star charts at our place for chores that need to be done.
I know this sounds weird but DP's daughter (almost 6) really loves doing the laundry with me.
She'll help me put the clothes in, pour the power and fabric softner, then pushing the buttons (favourtie bit) she also loves helping peg the stuff on the line.
Have you thought about getting them to help out in the kitchen? Our favourite meal to make is home-made pizza, kneading is lots of fun as is watching daddy throwing the dough in the air. The recpie here is really easy if you have an hour or two over the school holidays!

I agree with others if your OK with wat chores they do then its all good.
All our children are in charge of keeping there rooms tidy, making bed, etc our 2 year old is only expected to chuck his duvet on the bed to him its then made, lol . Our 10 and 7 yr olds alternate unloading the dishwasher and peeling potatoes. Our 10 year old loves cooking so 1 night a week shes allowed to cook dinner, although I do try and angle her towards doing easier meals like burgers etc. In fact they all love cooking which makes the kitchen a relatively busy place when getting dinner ready.
Most days they help put the washing away but this is really something they just do rather than be asked.
In preparation for our nb we are expecting in nov Ive taught 10yr old how to make a bottle of formula for our youngest incase Im not able to for whatever reason.
I say just do what works for you.

I agree do what works for you guys...
I have a 12 year old who is really a great help at home! Since around 8 she has done dishes and been responsible for feeding the animals and keeping her room tidy. Now she has to walk the dog and feed the animals, keep her room tidy and do one extra chore a day for her pocket money - so she does things like hanging out washing, folding washing, dishes, cleaning the bathroom, vaccuming a room...

Our DD (5) is very house proud Since she was 3 her job has been to take the recycling from the kitchen out to the bin in the garage at the end of the day. She now is expected to keep her room clean and tidy (she vacuums it too, but only cos she loves it!!!) and make her bed in the mornings. She tidies the playroom in the evenings, and her latest thing is unloading the dishwasher!!! We quite often finding her cleaning the bathroom vanity, or folding washing!!! Shes a funny little thing

Maya is hopeless when it comes to keeping her room clean, but I try not to be too hard on her about it as she is really good about helping out with the other kids - sometimes if she's up early she gets Chiara up and brings her in to me in bed to feed, she does the gremlins seatbelts up while I put Chiara in her seat etc.
One thing I have started getting her to do tho is unload the dishwasher, and the gremlins usually help (by choice), I figure it's a start.
Oh and she sometimes volunteers to vacuum, crazy girl!

Jakes only 2 but he puts his own toys away in the lounge and helps make his bed and puts his washing in down in the hamper and passes me pegs when I'm hanging out. He sets the table and takes his dirty dishes to the kitchen after meals too. He'll run the cloth around the bath after hes done and put his bath toys back in their box too. Its good for kids to learn how to be responsible and help out but like PPs have said - as long as you're happy

whatever is working for your household, I think, so long as they are learning responsibility.
Chloe already "helps" wash the dishes every morning, set the table and closes doors etc. oh and closes the dishwasher and sets it going after we put in the powder. She also hands me pegs etc. while hanging up washing. She helped Daddy to scrub the kitchen floor before. The things I get her to do regularly are putting things in the rubbish, tidying her toys, helping set the table etc. which is age appropriate I think.
We used to have to clean our rooms every Saturday, take turns with dishes, put out our washing, get in the wood and set and clear the table. And feed the pigs, but we were on a farm and that doesn't apply to everyone We had to do vacuuming if we were asked to. We got extra pocket money for things like sorting out cupboards, washing windows/floors, washing the car, mowing lawns, etc.
