Topic: Advice Please on an idea Posted: 28 February 2006 at 10:22am |
Hi everyone, I am at the moment doing up a business plan to start a business from home that hopefully will let me work around the children. The business is a Spray Tanning business that will also be mobile so that a spray can be done easily and in the comfort of your own home. (no mess!)
Has anyone ever had a spray tan?
If yes what did you pay? As "yummy mummy's" would you pay to feel and look good for a few days?
I am looking at a tan being $40 in house & $50 mobile as well as tanning parties where I would spray you and friends with a few drinks and nibbles.
Any feedback at all would be great as I am struggling a little as to should I jump into this or maybe find a weekend job. My weekends are precious with my hubby and kids! I am unsure of the viability of this business though and it is hard to forecast without some real input. It all sounds viable to me but I can't meet the repayments without the custom?
Thanks so much guys, much appreciated for your feedback if you can. Free market research - a bit cheeky hey

Hey Deharn. I have never had a spray tan, and at the moment (not working, SAHM) wouldnt be able to afford it. But maybe as a one off gift from somebody I would do it. I like the idea of the parties tho. Just another thought, are you planning on just working during the day - no evenings or weekends - as that may limit your potential market?? Hope that is somewhat helpful. Good luck. Also, where in NZ are you?

Thanks for the post aimeejoy
I am hoping to do the tan's more after hours and weekends but envisage this is a preferable option to spending a whole weekend at work - few hours here and there. I was thinking that a lot of people who may be the target client perhaps work so after hours would suit or when hubby/partner is home to mind the kids. The late night hairdressers seem to be always busy during those hours which tends to indicate that's the demand for time.
I am in Lower Hutt so have Wellington area as well to market. I have never had my own business before. Whilst I am enthusiastic and full of ideas I am worried about the money needed to get going and continue when I only have my husbands wage to draw on (which is as we can all appreciate I would imagine, tight as it is).
Thanks so much again for your thoughts.

I've had a spray tan and it was good but to be honest I probably wouldn't pay for one regularly. If it was a gift or a special occasion (ie friends/family wedding etc).

Thanks Paws, I had one for my wedding and must admit I would only do it for a special occasion too although I loved it.
I guess this is what i am trying to find out within the demographic of us mums.
I should clarify I am not trying to drum up business, merely hoping to get other's opinions on if this is something they would do?
Cheers

I used to get spray tanned every week pre pregnancy/baby (high maintainence..) it cost $40 for the first, and $25 for top up within 7 days. it might have changed now? its been a while! They are great, but it is important you get every last cm of skin, and stress to client to go without moisturier before tan, as it wrecks tan. I had about 3 goes getting my first one done spot on as it was very blotchy and uneven at first, althugh it was new, and they were just learning. On the down side, if you are getting them all the time, you do tend to get a yucky orangey browney scaley build up where your bra sits and in creases like around armpit etc.
Sounds like a fabbo idea, in the comfort of your own home etc.. Go for it!

I'd do it on a special occasion for sure (but not regularly unfortunately.)
And to be honest, would probably pay for it in my own home as child is a hassle (who ever has time to go to a beauty salon when you've got a kid???)

or hairdressers!! - went the other day with Arna to get my hair coloured (she needed a cut too) and we were in there for 3 hours and she wasn't allowed off my knee / pram, nearly went insane. Can you tell I havent had it done since b4 she was born?
I would get a spray tan here and then depending on money / what I am doing - don't need a spray tan while milking!!

Cool guys, you are inspiring me to get going on this, I need to try to get over the fear of failure and money restrictions. I guess we can eat 2 minute noodles for a while until I make profit.
Wow new mum I can not beleive that you managed a 3 hour stint with a bub at the hairdressers - that deserves an award or something!!!!!! There is no way Sam would sit still for 3 minutes at the hairdressers.

A friend of mine works at a salon and has a special room where she does the spray tans as well. They cost $35 and she has a huge client base.
A good thing to provide would be disposable knickers.

My sister gets spray tans done regularly. I think she pays about $55 to have it done at a salon.
Love the disposable knickers idea Maria.

The knickers are plastic g strings and are super sexy as you could imagine! Although I haven't started yet i have been told that you are so busy concentrating on the tan being even you don't look at bodies.
Mind you there's still no way this post preggie big bottom would be caught dead in a plastic gstring.
I really appreciate the feedback girls, thanks heaps!
