as i sit here expressing after yet another useless attempt to feed jordis, i have to wonder what the hell is going on. for nearly 10 days she has been feeding only pitiful amounts, the last 2 days have been a nightmare. she refuses to feed off me, arches her back and screams, then takes forever to calm down. she is desperately hungry, wants to eat solids, but just wont drink milk. i have tried giving ebm but its the same thing.
she used to have reflux, so wondering if it could have come back??? last friday i gave her banana and all this started, so maybe it is that???? i would have thought it would be out of her system by now though 
please does anyone have some advise for me? i am nearly in tears that she is rejecting me so much, but should i stop pushing her to breastfeed if she really doesnt want to? i had hoped to get to 12 months at least 
she will feed semi ok for the first feed in the morning, and last night dh managed to get some ebm into her during a dream feed, but its not enough!
help please!

The back arching sounds like reflux, but I don't know if it comes back or anything Krystiana arches her back just when she doesn't want feeding.
Is Jordis feeding at all? Hannah went on a feeding strike when she was 2mos, didn't like my bm, turned out the flavour had changed with AF hormones. Kryssi also didn't appreciate my AF coming back, she was almost 6mos and she almost refused feeds.
Then you need to check for not feeling well, particularly ear infections - does it hurt her to lay down, particularly on one side or the other?
But there's another thing. Kryssi is down to 4-6 feeds a day, almost suddenly, and wants heaps of solids. She's having about 3 tins a day and she's 6mos. Even likes water from a bottle! But she will feed right before bed and in the middle of the night.
Just a few ideas to look into...

As is said in the Nov thread Rhyley refused his bottles today...
It was down to a high temp and teething. so is she teething? Have you tried putting bonjela on her gums before feeding or pamol or teething powder?

How about giving plunket line a call. My midwife (now this is when rhyley was only 3 or 4 weeks old) refered me to a La Leche person (who use to be a plunket nurse) when he wasn't latching so maybe plunket line or your plunket nurse can refer to some one like that and they can come round and see what she is doing an perhaps shed some light on it...??

i took her to the doctor yesterday, and her ears and things are clear. i have dosed her on paracetomol before feeding in an attempt to sort whatever her problem is, and that doesnt work either.
she will feed at 6.00 in the morning, which i still treat as a night feed. she goes back to bed, and then whenever she wakes again i feed in her room as if it is another night feed - no noise, curtains pulled etc. sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt.
then after that i will offer her a feed at lunchtime, around 3ish, and at 6ish. up to now those last 3 feeds have been extremely quick, 2 mins a side, maybe 3 if i am lucky. but now she latches for seconds rather than minutes, and that is even if i can get her to latch at all! all to often when we "assume the position" she turns her head away and wont budge.
it could be my Af, i dont know though as it hasnt come back yet. have just started on the mini pill today so hoping it will settle things down.
GOD bombshell, i hope not!!!! we already have a pill baby, wouldnt be fair to have a condom one too. jordis would be the only "planned" one then 
we tried to get jordis to drink her bedtime bottle, but she only had about 10mls and refused it. she just cannot be drinking enough like this!
thanks for the ideas, really helps so please keep them coming 
(oh and forgot, i will be contacting plunket again tomorrow, the lactation consultant works thurs and fri, so hoping she can help with some ideas.

sorry lyla I remember you saying you had taken her to the dr's. The lactation person seems the go. Hopefully they have some answers even if you can go there to feed her to show what she is like or they can come to you. Let us know how it goes.

about 15 mins after i had told him that, he said from the couch with the laptop "there are HEAPS of reasons why an infant might be on a nursing strike" he had googled it, he was that worried!!!
thanks for the everyone. have had one good feed first thing this morning, and has refused me twice, so i have refused to give her breakfast. she is in bed now. i dont think holding out on food is a long term solution, but it might help for today.
any moment now the phone will ring with lactation consulatant offering expert advice... and dh is coming home at lunchtime with hugs and chocolate not necessarily in that order

Oh Lyla, that all sounds so miserable, you poor thing! How do you feel about formula? (just suggesting it on the off-chance that she'd take to a different milk - I know it still comes with the problem of getting her to take the bottle though). I've been known to tip feeds into Ella from a cup, sip by sip - takes forever but gets some into her. And that great big 10ml syringe can be put to good use too. Thing is, I don't know that either idea helps with your stress levels - might be worse!
Sounds refluxy to me - do you have any of her old meds left? A chemist could tell you how much she'd need at her weight now, and they woudn't do her any harm... half the time Doc's treat reflux as a means of diagnosis anyway! Hope this comes right for you soon - sounds really taxing.

thanks andie, we tried formula today with the same reaction.
after talking to the plunket lactation consultant, i went back to my doctor today, and we were rushed down to the hospital for the paeds to check jordis over. she has become dehydrated. we were there for 4 hours, and it was touch and go whether she would be given a nasal-gastric tube to get some fluid into her. i tried feeding her several times there and she did the same as always - although i managed one small 46 second feed ( i timed it lol!) on one side. a nurse managed to get 60 mls paedialite into her, and she ate some solids, which is the only reason we werent admitted. before we left we tried some formula, and she wouldnt even taste it. am relieved it isnt just my milk she is refusing. all ears, eyes, throat etc are fine and clear.
the hospital lactation consultant is ringing me tomorrow. the doctors diagnosis was breaststrike which is so helpful to me, NOT! hoping the LC there will be more helpful. i have to try any way i can to get some fluid into her - spoon/syringe/cup/boob/bottle/mix into food etc. she is still eating a small amount of solids so that helps.
so not sure where that leaves us, will take it step by step, feed by feed. and i have to remember, as the doctor told me "if she is thirsty, she will drink"

oh dear being dehydrated. I hope they sort it out soon - how long can a breast strike go on for? but its not just your breast she won't take a bottle either. only thing I can think of and sure you have been doing is seringe water or EBM every chance you can get. I know when Brooke got dehydrated they told me to offer water on a spoon every 10 minutes (different reason for dehydration though)
