Topic: Food & Feed Posted: 10 July 2007 at 8:57pm |
Krystiana is 6mos and she is starting to wake up at our mealtimes and want what we're eating and NOT feed... until after she's had something (ie a whole tin of something) to eat. Then let that settle and sometimes a feed after that. So she's feeding heaps less than about 3 weeks ago.
Isn't she 'supposed' to still be having feed before solids? I'm starting to wonder if she is trying to self-wean, perhaps because of my flavour change last week (should be fine now though!)... she doesn't seem to have a prob with my flavour in the middle of the night though! But at nights she's still waking about 4 hourly for feeding, so is it just that she really is that hungry and needs more solids to fill her up?
Today she ate
2 1/2 tins of food
1/2 pc bread
a plain biscuit
1/2 a cracker
about 1/2 tin worth of pumpkin soup
and a few feeds on top of that but I can't remember how many.
When I say she won't feed until she's eaten, she'll act all hungry etc but when I put her in the feeding position she zips her lips and turns away and tries to sit up LOL then bites her finger and watches what we're eating!! She's such a crack up. But anyway, how do I know if she's drinking enough?

i dont know the answer to this, but jordis is doing the same, she goes on a milk strike if she thinks she might get something to eat instead. i have had to start feeding her in her room straight after she gets up from a sleep, and pretend it is a early morning feed (which is the only one she still feeds properly for) i am still timing her feeds and she will only last 2 mins. i had put it down to her being distracted by xanthe in the living room.
i dont want her to self wean so i will perservere with feeding in her room until she gets past the novelty of watching her big sister!

OMGosh these girls are the total opposite to my little milkaholic. He goes on solid strikes and wont touch any solids offered and cluster feeds evry 2hrly...including during the night Sorry I dont know about the liquids questions Theresa. Will she take some water from a cup of EBM when eating finger food or while having solids?

Busymum. I had a similar problem with Harlan. He would eat lots, always having his feed of milk 1st, then, he started teething again. Now he is feeding more and less solids UNLESS he can do it himself, or if it is banana...... He goes to bed at about 6.30pm, wakes about 4.30pm, has a top up, then back in bed until about 7.00am, then has a feed, wait until about 8.00am then has his piece of toast. He then has another feed at around 11.15am - 11.30am of milk, then he has a tin, or a whole mashed banana - something biggish. He will then sometimes want a top up at about 2.45pm ish, them he as a feed at 4.00pm (ish), solids when we are eating our tea - about 5.30pm, them bath and bed.
I though Harlan was trying to wean himself before he started on his second tooth, but that does not appear to be the case now.
Krystiana will be fine. She is eating - very well by the sounds of it.

just to tell you how much of a milk strike has been going on, i express every evening and normally get about 100 mls. tonight i spilled over a 180 ml bottle! frustrating as i am on medication and have to express several times a day to maintain supply, so this will mess with supply lots tomorrow. my mistake was i didnt feed her in her room at 6, so it was a mess!
bah!

I had the opposite problem, my gremlins are more like Alize, milkaholics, they would guzle their milk feeds but weren't big fans of solids, so I switched them to solids before milk at about 6 months to try and get them eating more solids. So I don't think it would do you any harm to give Krystiana her solids first if thats what works best for you. In terms of refusing her milk feeds, I remember with Maya there came a point where I had to do what Lyla suggested - feed her in a quiet room away from distraction, otherwise she was far too busy looking around.
As Krystiana's solids intake increases too it's natural that her breastmilk increase will decrease. At six months she only *needs* 4 good feeds in a 24 hour period so if she fusses over them try not to stress too much. As if stressing isn't what we do as mums anyway!

Well hopefully then she'll be getting the equivalent amount of milk as 4 'good' feeds from her 5-6 'fussy' feeds

I've got a milkaholic as well and i'm happy with that. Josh is currently having 1/3 of a tin mixed with baby rice at lunch and dinner.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Oh they are 5-6 good feeds - including 2 at nights still Her routine is: get up, refuse feed, eat solids (a whole tin in a sitting!), play, have one breast before sleep. Repeat 4 times in a day and wake twice in the night (4 hourly) for more milk (again only one side at a time, but a decent length of time).

Ooh Emma I might try solids first and even withholding bf for a couple of hours. I thinks its my fault as Alize is on and off the boob all day on demand really, even if I have my sling at pak n save he can go on while shopping .

Kels, I have never quite mastered bf and sling but Bria used to bf in the front pack (and one arm supporting her, the other pushing the trolley lol). At PNS Kryssi has to wait until we leave, although I did open a packet of wine bikkies last time - don't like doing that as a rule.
