Topic: Vic Uni Creches Posted: 28 May 2009 at 5:54pm |
Hey All
Im going to be at uni next year again and im just wondering if anyone has used the creches at Vic, Im just wanting to know what people have thought of them, whether its really hard to get into them etc. Also whether you can put bubs in for half days?
Also Baby will only be around 2 months and although ill be studying full time i think i will have around 12-15 hours of lectures a week. Is baby too young to be in care for some of these hours do you think? DP and MIL will hopefully be able to look after bub some of the time aswell.
Sorry if this doesnt make sense opinions are greatly appreciated!

I didnt think most places took babies that young .. so that might be something to look into
Edited to add ..
Babies also arent immunised until 12 weeks .. so Im not sure putting a baby at that age into a creche or dc would be very good, (and I think that is the reason most places wont take them that young) as an ECE environment is a breeding ground for bugs

Thanks lilfatty, i obviously have a lot to learn! I just had no idea at all so how old does a baby need to be to go into care.
Gosh i feel like a real muppet right now not knowing that....

I think it depends on the creche/daycare... mine says they'll take babies from as young as 6 weeks (although I don't think in practice they've ever had one that young, there's one there atm that's 12 weeks old but her mum is one of the teachers there).
I know what lilfatty means about germs - JJ no sooner shakes a cold than he comes home with a new one at the moment, there are constant runny noses there - but I'm inclined to think that it's probably not as bad for the little babies because they're not moving around all over the place, interacting with other babies or chewing on all the toys other babies have chewed on like they do when they're a bit older.
So if it's something you have to do don't feel too bad about it. It's hard though - I found it hard enough when JJ was 6 months, wouldn't have been able to contemplate it when he was 6 weeks (I was just starting to get to know him then)!

oh yeah and I've heard there's quite a waiting list for the vic uni creches, whether that's still the case I don't know... good idea to look into it now anyway.

Its a bit hard DP could end up being home 4 days a week until 2pm and all day 1 day a week but thats only if he stays at his current job and he finishes his degree this year and is supposed to be job hunting so trying to work out if its better if he just stays at that job for awhile... we can afford him to but its whether he wants something with a bit more challenge for him.
I really am not looking forward to having to leave baby while i goto uni but if i dont start in march then i can't do the course until the year after as they dont do 2nd trimester intakes for the degree i want to do. Which means funnily enough we will be worse off money wise if i dont goto uni and dont work.
[:'(] its all a bit upsetting really because id hoped i would be able to stay home for a bit longer than 2 months with baby but yea it means giving up doing my degree for another year, and then would need to go back to work part-time at some stage anyways to make ends meet...again dont think im making a lot of sense sorry quite tired.

On the website it says they only take enrolments every November, people that were enrolled that year get first dibs(for lack of better words) and there are waiting lists.

I think there is the possibility of doing my course from distance learning so may find out if it is possible to do my first trimester from home and then continue from uni 2nd trimester onwards as baby will be 7 or so months by then.... feel free to keep popping in with opinions though peeps... and thanks heaps Weegee and Lilfatty!

dont worry. they can go in from birth at Vic. Mack is enrolled for next semester. the min is 2 hours twice a week and it is quite hard to get them in. my classes were in the afternoon so she let me skip the waiting list since they were quieter times. bubs will be over 6 weeks when he goes in so would have his first set of immunisations. if you want any more info PM me your email addy and ill send you the details of the woman i spoke to who looks after all 3 creches there

We've been using the Vic creche for the past 6 years but the one we used had more structured times...it had to be five days and you can either do am's, pm's, till 3pm or full time. Think it is where parents who are working for Vic Uni placed there kids (DH was as student so we struck it lucky). The centre we used took babies from 3 months and we have been really happy with it. DS2 had his last day there last week as I am now at home and it was a very sad day to say goodbye to all the teachers. We found them to be excellent, good luck with your plans

Im pleased you asked Bex cos this is something that i have been thinking about too. I want to do my degree when bubs is about 8 months or so but only part time and wanted to see how easy it was to get into the creche's at vic and whether they would just take bubs for a few hours twice a week (or whatever my course requirements are)
