Hrmmmm... well this isn't really going to help with the sleeping through the night thing.
I started cutting down breastfeeds, one per week (or every couple of days) and replacing them with formula (she wouldn't take cow's milk at that stage), then she cottoned on to what I was doing and started refusing formula too. So I just continued to offer to her and if she turned it away then she didn't get any milk at all.
After a while of having only one breastfeed per day, I decided to try the last feed as a bottle. At some stage she took it when she realised that if she wasn't going to drink that then she'd get nothing - then she'd drink anything!
Switched to cow's milk and haven't looked back.
It did take a while though as I was anxious that if I didn't give her a bedtime feed then she wouldn't sleep through. So yeah, that was why it was the last feed I dropped. In the end it was a matter of trying her with a bottle because I needed to go out one night. Fortunately she took it then otherwise I'd have been screwed!

I don't know if this helps at all... but controlled crying wasn't working for me, neither was trying to soothe my darling to sleep... again, in the end I just had to be tough and let her cry it out. She went to sleep much faster than any other method! (Seemed to renew her efforts to cry when I used controlled crying)
They say it takes 3 nights to change a babies habits. Unfortunately that means staying strong for 72 hours, but you can do it!

how many feeds are you giving at the mo and what time does your baby wake, these things could make a diff. with my son he just seemed to drop feeds himself. well sort off, one day we were out and really busy and i forgot to give him a feed and he didnt complain and when i realised i felt stink, but tried it again the next day and hey presto one feed gone. mind you i also never replaced it with a bottle or anything and he was sleeping thru earlier than your baby.
have you spoken to your mum about it?, she may have some ideas. i know my mum is a bit old fashioned with some of her advice (like why are you still b/f at 6 months?) but she did also have some really good helpful advice too.

Quinn would never take a bottle or drink milk. In the end, he was about 13 months and he was down to one feed in the morning and one in the evening. I slowly dropped the morning feed so he was only having one. He didn't even care! Then after weeks of psyching myself up for it I stopped his evening feed. Once again, he registered no complaints!
I was like Nikki, thinking that if he didn't get that feed at night he wouldn't sleep thru. But, basically he very rarely sleeps thru anyway and whether or not he had that feed there was no difference. When he wakes up, I ignore him for as long as possible. Sometimes he puts himself back to sleep but sometimes I get up,lie him down, tell him to shoosh and leave. He knows the deal now and goes back to sleep.
