Topic: What do I do with it all??? Posted: 22 October 2008 at 12:45pm |
Ashleigh's old clothes I am talking about. We are moving in a couple of weeks so I've been cleaning out the spare wardrobe today. I discovered I have 2 huge underbed storage thingies, 1 black rubbish sack full to bursting and 10 supermarkets bags full of clothes she has outgrown. And they are only size 1 and under as she is wearing size 2's now How on earth did I collect so many clothes for her and what the hell am I going to do with them all?? I'm keeping them in case I have another girl so I'll have to find room somewhere in the new house
Pic - covering the entire double wardrobe (without the black sack)

LOL, it's ridiculous isn't it? I have 2 shelves in Michaela's wardrobe devoted to old clothes plus a huge plastic storage container in the linen closet, a moses basket full and more boxes in the spareroom wardrobe and it's mostly pink and frilly, I don't know what I'm going to do if this one's a boy.
ETA: Michaela has a double wardrobe and the shelves run the length of it.

Vacuum pack it - then store them all. It really does save on space. I'm not sure where you get the bags from but you put the clothes in the bag then use the vacuum cleaner to suck all the extra air out of the bag. Bags are a little bit pricey but worth it if you're going to be keeping things for awhile.

Ha ha... how does someone so tiny have so many clothes?!? Ella's wardrobe was much the same . When I found out that this bub is a boy, I sorted my way through them all and ended up giving most of them away, keeping 2 file-boxes of the faves in case we have another girl.
All's I can say is get them out of the plastic bags! Those archive file boxes hold a lot, and stack nicely to take up less room, and being cardboard you won't have to worry about them getting marks or moulding up. Also, chuck a bar of soap in it's box in the containers that have any pure wool items in them.

The vacuum bags are EXCELLENT! You can get them from Briscoes and they're really not too pricey. We live in a tiny place with very little storage, and these are great. They suck right down to a very slim but long-ish bag that you can either put on a shelf in the wardrobe/linen cupboard or under the bed.

I have never chucked any of Keiras clothes. I have put them in boxes and sealed them shut. ANd now have no idea where hal of them are (burried somewhere in the garage ) I intended on passing them all down to number 2 and it was great she turned out to be a girl But I have only ever used the odd few things. I have recently resorted through some of the boxes and once they have been away for a while you notice how horrible some of the stuff really is.
Honestly I found it a whole lot easier starting over with Maddi's wardrobe and only keeping the clothes that are in really good condition or have sentimental value.

I keep myself limited to two banana boxes each main size stored in the top of various wardrobes. I have two boxes for 0-6mos, 6-12mos, size 2, size 3, size 4+ (to allow hand me downs we have but H doesn't fit yet). Although atm none of the size 2-4 clothes are being stored for obvious reasons!
I do the same with my maternity clothes too - although at the moment what's stored are my "little" clothes

The gremlins have a toy chest full of stuff from Maya to grow into, and Chiara has about 6 Huggies boxes scattered around the various wardrobes. The problem is I keep seeing cute new stuff to buy and forgetting what I have in the boxes.
Oh but I did put Chiara in one of the little dresses I had for the gremlins the other day and it was so sweet to see her in something they had worn, so special.

I only kept the really nice things of Charlottes and gave away all the day to day stuff in those charity bags that come around. I HATE storing stuff (especially since this stupid house has no storage) but I still have 3 giant bags full of clothes for her to grow into.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the boxes of stuff under the spare bed that we have been given for her to grown into! They go up to size 5 and 6 I think!!

wow you guys have all held onto alot. If you haven't got the space then i would think the best thing to do is sort through all the items decide on what isn't going to cahnge in fashion and what can be used by either sex then donate the rest to charity. Lets be honest ladies we all buy new seasons clothes for ourselves so its proberly likely yo will buy at least something new each year. I know it sounds harsh and i haven't got any kids myself but i do know what its like having storage problems. I'm not saying to get rid of all of it just the things that you don't think will be used again and hold onto those things that have sentimental value too. Maybe you can sort through sthe clothes with your kids I remember having old clothes of mine and my brothers to use on my doll.
Another thing to think about is if something tragic was to happen at home like a fire would you replace them?

I just donated 16 grocery bags full of clothing from newborn to about 5yrs. I gave them to a place that has lots of mums going through and some really need clothes. I could have sold them on trademe, but it felt right to donate them. In fact I just left them at the door of the place one Sunday arvo and didn't even tell them where they came from!
