Topic: bubs drinking water? Posted: 17 April 2007 at 2:18pm |
I have been trying for a few months now to get water into piper and so far have not been successful I know I should have introduced bottles of water from a younger age but she just refuses the bottle anytime I try now, pushes it away, screams at me until I give up.
Does anyone have any tips or suggestions I could try? as I would like her to drink something else as well as her daily intake of formula

I give James water in a sippa cup as he doesn't take any form of bottle at all it took a while to get used to it but he's getting better at it every day he can even hold it at put it in his mouth but can't tip it up or if he tries it just looks like he's had an accident.
Anyway maybe you could try a sippa cup and see how she goes with that.
Good luck

i used to just leave a sippy bottle on the floor with water in for my girls to play with and drink as they wished. Dont force it as that will make her more stubborn

Taine loves water from a pump bottle. He also drinks from a bottle normally though, so that might not be much help/

Emma Rose went through this as well. She used to point-blank refuse to drink the water, and would push the bottle away. Finally I tried a sippy cup -- both the kind with the straw in it and the kind with the valve in the lid -- and she gradually took to those. I also left them around when she was playing, and when she got thirsty, she would look for them and drink out of them. Admittedly, the first several times, she'd take a sip and then throw them away, but after a while she figured out she wasn't getting anything else and started to accept the water. Now she's a really good drinker, but it took about 8 weeks all up to get her here.
Another thing I made sure to do was to make sure when I give her a bottle of milk or formula, it's in a bottle, and water is always in a sippy cup -- so she learns what comes in what. I'm hoping this makes phasing out the bottles/formula at some point easier!
She also loves drinking from my cup when I'm drinking ANYTHING -- messy as she doesn't quite get how to work it, but if I hold it for her, some water will get down her gullet. You could try that!
Good luck -- let us know how you go! :)

I'm with Katherine - even at 4 Maya would rather share my drink that have her own, even when it's exactly the same thing.

Josh loved drinking out of the cups with the straws and thats the only way he would drink anything - as went off bottle at 11 months.

We also use a sipper cup...Tyrell would NOT drink water out of a bottle so it works wonders, took a while to get used to but he now will take sips through out the day....but he has to hold it aswell!
