Topic: Tantrums in 10mth old babies Posted: 02 July 2007 at 10:53am |
People keep telling me how lovely babies are around the 10mth mark but my always grizzly girl is getting worse, not better! We had a yucky weekend and now DH is happy to be at work just to get away from the constant grumpiness of our beautiful baby. The tantrums are rediculous...she used to love pak 'n save but on Sun I popped her in the trolly which she used to love and she screamed, I gave her the list that she usually loves to hold and chew and she threw it with force and screamed and then grizzled / cried the whole way around the supermarket.
Are tantrums an issue for most babies at this age? We seem to get a least a couple every hour and she is a total misery guts in between.
We are ignoring the tantrums but still getting lots of them.

We don't get them that often but we definetly get them even at 9 months. We've been employing a sort of "time out". I know some may or may not agree but it's for the sake of our sanity. We just pop her in her room for a few mins and she calms down with no audience.

Could Elle be teething? I know Alyssa is a real grizzle guts whenever she has teeth coming through and just seems like she's constantly miserable.. There was a stage where I couldn't take her shopping or to the mall with me either due to her reaction.

Yes she is teething and by the looks of it is cutting her second bottom tooth + her top 2. I don't think that teething is the cause of this current misery though as I've tried pamol / bonjela / fenpaed / Weleda teething powder / teethmed spray and none of them relieve things at all.

I used to put Hannah, at 10mos, into her room for a minute until she settled down. If she had kept on like yours does I would have put her to bed! A couple every hour doesn't seem right

No you're right busymum...but very little about our daughters behaviour seems right. That's what worries me but paeds etc all say it's just temperament.

Can these tantrums etc occur like this before a milestone such as walking?
As I've mentioned before she doesn't yet crawl or shuffle or have any other method of independent mobility so she is probably very frustrated. She is ONLY happy if we are walking her around the house. If she sees we are walking her towards a table or something that she could hold onto she has a paddy as she clearly wants to walk, not just stand. If we put it down it means we aren't walking her around and hence we get another paddy. We just got a walker wagon but she's not yet confident enough to use it on her own.

I was going to ask about moving. i know just before my boys started moving about they used to be so frustrated, and throw tantrums at the mere frustration of not being able to move. While loud, this frustration is also a great motivator and necessary to get babies moving. not much help for you guys who have to put up with it, but maybe a sign that she is ready to crawl...or walk.

I do hope so lizzle! I tell you, this girl of ours has been such hard work emotionally. It's just beyond draining (hence all the questions I ask...trying to get my head around it and make it through each day and week).
Please please may the joyous and rewarding part of parenting start soon! She's going to be 1 soon and it is so sad that the first year has been such a battle :( as we can't get it back.

 Fiona!
Benjy has tantrums when he wants something and we won't let him have/do it or when we don't understand what it is he wants!
He also tanties about wanting food and in the evenings around dinner prep/cleanup he wants to be held allllll the time and moans if I won't pick him up.
He gets very grizzly with teething too.

Elle's been up 40mins and has had 7 tantrums. She has also grizzled constantly through her lunch (has always grizzled through all solid meals). This is what most days are like

I know what you mean about not being able to get that first year back and it really breaks my heart to think of what you guys must all be going through
I don't have anymore advice than I've already given other than the walker thing will take time as it is a confidence thing for them. Caitlin is walking unaided and still gets weary with the walker.
Sending you all lots of hugs and if you ever need a break just yell out

Aw, Fiona - that absolutely sux for you! Whatever you do, DON'T go blaming yourself (like us mum's always seem to do!). It plain stinks when your baby grizzles through their solids (I know what that one's like and it ruins the whole feeding thing, doesn't it), and having a grumpy-bum in the house effects everyone there, no matter how tiny and cute that grumpy-bum is! Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing your lovely little girl, but I do think that you're doing a stellar job of being a SAHM when you're dealing with such challenging behaviour day in and day out. Big up's to you! I hope wee Elle can make a turn-around soon.

I just found this http://www.onceuponalife.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1905.html
Try to ignore all the bits where they say "at 3 months old they suddenly came right" as I know that's REALLY not what you need to hear.
Here's a book that a friend of mine reccomended to me. "The Fussy Baby Book" By Dr. Sears.
Ofcourse I know its not easy to find time to read when you have a high needs baby.
you can also get some info at
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/5/T050100.asp
I hope this helps.
I think one of the keys things I got out of the reading is to really confide in people who understand what its like to have a high needs child... Our friends with easier babies or no babies really couldn't see or understand what we went through taking care of Nick.
ETA: I just had a read through the "12 signs of a high need baby" and read the "super sensitive". Sounds just like what you describe! I'd better get back to work now but I hope the site provides some help

Thanks Toni.
LOL re: the "they'll come right at 3mths" comment. We heard that so many times...she'll be better at 3mths or 4mths or 6mths and yet there is still very little improvement, hence why I am a little cynical about the latest "she'll be better at 12mths / when she can walk".
I've read the Sears book as well as others and you're right, it does describe Elle to some extent. The idea of surrounding oneself with Mums who understand is a great idea in theory but I can't find any who have babies like Elle! All the ones I come across have reflux babies but none have babies with unexplained issues like Elle. The Mums I do know are a wonderful support though :)
