With DH's job coming to a close next week, and no new job in place yet, we have decided that I'll go temping (I have a background as legal secretary) and get us with some part-time work instead of the dole lol. I'm going to sign up with an agency but (while I wait for them to call back) I'm just wondering how does it work? And do I need to look out for any pitfalls?

I've done loads of temping Teresa, here in Palmy.
I registered with a couple of agencies, they will probably get you to do a typing test and either a word or excel skills test. They will contact you with a suitable assignment, you fill in your timesheet and get paid the following week.

It does pay to keep in touch with them with your availability, the more you bother them the more likely they will remember you when something comes up.

Massey use lots of temps, try emailling the secretaries group they often have need for casuals.

I went thru PN Personnel and Sterling, with your skills you shouldn't have any trouble finding something. The hourly rate is much better than the dole.

Temping is good, for experience I think. I'm temping at the moment. Check re. the status on holiday pay - my last temping posiiton in Hamilton, my holiday pay accrued and I was paid out at the end of each assignment, however this time my holiday pay is included in my weekly pay (so I get $x/hr plus 8%= $y/hr). It will probably be more continuous in Auckland as firms are always crying out for temps/float secretaries however down here in Taranaki there isn't a lot of call for legal temps, so currently I'm working in the oil/gas industry. I have a GOOD hourly rate and it's a huge learning experience so that's what clinched it for me - it's something else to add to my repertoire instead of sticking to one industry. That's just how I look at it though. It helps that I need to pay the rent as well.

Oh, and furthering on from fleury - I also did a data entry and Word test. I am only registered with one local agency (they get the majority of work), but definitely register with more than one to try for continuity of work, and keep in touch with them. I have just done my first week's work, will drop my timesheet in this afternoon (I only work part-time) and my pay will be put through on Tuesday. ALSO bear in mind you are automatically enrolled in KiwiSaver unless you wish to opt out. The agency should give you a booklet about it. You can't opt out until 2 weeks are up, and the IRD will refund any contributions made in that period of time.

Good on you for making such a big decision!! I hope something turns up soon for your DH.

I found temping really good.. I did a range of work.. Data entry and office admon sort of stuff.. then got my permanent job through the agency.
I rang every morning and asked if there was work.. I also got a few long term - 6 month jobs as well.

It was so long ago I cant really remember anything else!
