Topic: Solids Advice Posted: 04 March 2007 at 5:11pm |
I have never really been told how much solids Alyssa should be eating, just that when starting out it should be about 2 teaspoons then work your way up from there. Also, when she shows signs of not wanting any more then stop. Other than that, I don't know much??
Anyway, she is 7 months old now and I have been giving her solids for the last month and have worked up to 2 meals. The thing is, I hear stories about how much other babies eat and how they gobble up a whole jar, but I find she doesn't really eat a lot...maybe only 1/3 or 1/2 a jar if I'm lucky. She seems to be happy when eating then just refuses when she hits her limit so I try and couple more times then stop if she gets grizzly, however soon after the solids is all done with she wants milk (I am breastfeeding).
What I would like to know is, are some babies just not big on solids? Maybe is she just not hungry enough before I give her lunch & dinner? I assume she must be hungry cause she drinks a lot of milk afterwards... I have been giving her solids at 12pm and 6pm so there is some sort of routine but to be honest I still give her milk on demand so these times can vary. Does anyone have an example of feeding times they can share with me please?

Olivia is not hugely keen on solids at all. She has around 4-5 ice cubes of food per meal and most of the time doesn't finish it. I think not to worry too much as she is putting on weight really well and eats the right stuff: fruit, veges, meat and dairy. At Alyssa's age they are still topping up on the bottle as well. Am I right in thinking that Alyssa was a refluxer? This can hamper eating a little as damage is done to the esophagus, which still needs to drop down out of the way as baby grows. I put Olivia on to 3 smaller meals when she was about 6 months old as I preferred that she have more smaller meals rather than less frequent bigger ones because larger amounts can trigger reflux attacks.
Olivia's feeds are bottles when ever she likes, I have also found that this has made the weaning process a lot easier. Her "predictable" bottles are usually first thing when she gets up and 2 hrs after that then one at the end of the day. She might have up to 2 more in the course of the day but that varies. Olivia normally has breakfast after her first bottle, lunch at 11.30am and dinner around the 5pm mark. I sneak in a couple of grapes or crackers now between meals and she is usually fine with that. You have only just started solids so don't worry too much, ok?

Sounds like Alyssa is doing fine - and she sure looks healthy enough! I worry sometimes that my girls aren't taking enough milk as they'll usually only take around 80-100ml at a feed which is less than they took as newborns, and I hear everyone else saying "my baby takes 200ml etc. etc..." - I just try to remind myself that they are growing well, and are happy and thriving so I guess they just don't need as much food/milk as some others.
Maya on the other hand was a gannet. Would polish off 2 jars of baby food at a go by 8 mths and at 9mths was guzzling 4 x 240ml bottles as well. They really ARE all different!

Pepsi may I ask do you breastfeed or formula feed? That can have an effect as well. As for the amount your LO eat compare to others, if she is happy have normal poopy and enough wet nappies plus still gaining weight and not losing and isnt lethargic at all then she is doing great.
McKayla never ever ate as much as the other babies did and everyone that saw it told me I must feed her more. I have a really pet peeve about trying to put more food in their mouth when they dont want too. Check out for sighns like her turning her head. McKayla would always take about 3 bites to try new food and then will eat a bit.
It might be that your LO also will only eat more often and in lesser amounts later on. Take her palm size and then cube that. That is about the max her little tummy can actually handle at the moment. Doesnt really look like much does it? Some kids do eat a bit more than others.
But it sounds to me like you are doing great. BTW the jars over here. McKayla use to take that over like 6 meals with some homemade food. Would have lasted her about 3 meals.

Thanks ladies, it's reassuring to know that not all babies are hugely keen on solids. I guess I only ever hear about the big eaters and not the medium - small eaters out there haha.
Are there any signs to indicate when you can start changing textures? I find she is totally happy with pureed foods but even slightly thicker seems to make her unhappy.

Caitlin only takes half a cup of solids and 4 feeds of 200mls and she's 9kg.
We're still doing bottle then solids, but a couple of people I know who do it the other way around say that their 6-8mth old baby is eating a lot more solids and still finishing the whole bottle, so whatever works I guess. Plunket say bottle first until around 8mths old (I think? or was it 9mths?)

Hi Pepsi, Alyssa will let you know if she is hungry but it sounds like you have everything under control. Lycan is 7months as well and he is on 3 meals a day sometimes 4 (dessert) if he's still hungry....and about half and hour after every meal he likes to have some milk...(he's still fully BF as well). Our time table is like this most days:
Breakfast = 9:00am, Lunch = 1:00pm, and Dinner 6:00pm
In between lunch and dinner he likes to have a snack, piece of fruit and maybe a cookie.
Alyssa looks happy and healthy to me and remember every child is different.

Pepsi - also talk with plunket nurse, she should have even given you pamphlets and charts on starting solids and how to progress from there. Like everyone else said Alyssa looks like a very healthy baby, so I wouldn't be too worried about how much she is eating as long as she is happy and healthy.
I am not sure what it is like to have a small eater sorry as Xanda eats so much that everyone tells me he should not be eating that much, and he has always eaten alot.

We are on 2 meals of solids a day. We were up to 3 (8am breakfast, 12 lunch & 7ish dinner). However the past week I have not been able to get breakfast into Amelia at all, so have given up.
Today she ate probably half a cup for lunch. Yesterday was less than that and she wouldn't have dinner. I wouldn't term Amelia a large eater either - not compared to some in my coffee group.
However, I just have remember that sometimes we as adults also have days that we aren't as hungry, or we aren't actually big eaters either.
And sorry Emma .. we are on 200mls 4 x daily of formula! haha

Olivia started giving me signals that she was ready for the lumps at about 8 months which was great. Unfortunately she has done a hugely bad bout of teething and so lumps have been off the table! Although she still acts like a seagull if I am eating anything and so I give her lots of finger food to eat which she enjoys.
She will give you cues, some kids wont do lumps at all and move on to finger food straight away.

Thanks Peace, that's really good to know about the lumpy foods too so that I don't worry if she won't take to them.. Thankfully I have another Plunket visit tomorrow which will be the first one since I started Alyssa on solids. I'm sure they'll give me some pamphlets and stuff.
Your comment about Olivia acting like a seagull made me laugh, I've seen another baby eat like that and her mother said she just tries not to look cause it freaks her out too much!

Erin was never a big fan of lumps, so I gave up on them for a while, and have only just started on them again now... she still makes funny faces as if to say "Ewww... what's this cr*p !?"

Ella is a huge eater she does power through a jar of food at a time then polish off 180 - 200mls of milk but shes not the best gainer if anything shes probably the lightest out of all the july babies but shes perfectly healthy. Every baby is different and as long as piper is doing well which she looks like she is dont worry chicka
Ella is a funny one she LOVES lumps shes on the stage 3 food now so she will take her time eating instead of inhaling it all haha
