Prob been asked a million times but hoping someone can help as can't get thru to the IRD.

Can you take the 14 weeks paid at any time in the 52 weeks or does it need to be straight away?

Thanks

Hey Peanut, the 14 weeks of paid parental leave will come to you in the first 14 weeks of your maternity leave. They base the payments on when you are first going on leave from your job.

Once you apply for paid parental leave and are accepted, you'll get a letter from the IRD advising you of when the leave will be paid into your bank account (fortnightly), the starting date (usually two weeks after you first go on maternity leave), and the dollar amount you should expect.

I would have thought you could take it anytime? I had mine arranged to start the week Ashleigh was due but she was born 3.5 months early and I still only started getting it when I had applied for it?

That's right, KH25 -- you have to apply for it, and it's tied to your ending date at work and the start of the legally entitled 52 weeks of maternity leave that you can take. It's one of those "red tape" things that would require a very loooooong post to explain fully!

Gutted - as I am a teacher, we get holiday pay thru to feb the 1st and wanted to start my paid parent leave then.

Now I will have to pay more tax as will be receiving two incomes.

Peanut - if you get paid holiday pay until then, why don't you take them as holidays & just start your parental leave from the 1st Feb? Then your IRD payments won't start until then ie when you start your actual parental leave. Technically if you're getting paid holiday pay, I would've thought you would be on holiday - not on parental leave. I finished work 2 weeks before my due date & took those 2 weeks as holidays & had my parental leave from work (& payments from the IRD) start from my due date.

Nic01 is right, that's the way it should work -- because as long as you're getting paid from work, you're considered to be still working. Your employer has to sign off on your paid parental leave application and put the final end date of your work. Or you can get your employer to pay you out for your holidays in a lump sum in your last pay cheque (meaning you can go on leave earlier if you want to, and get the paid parental leave money earlier -- it's all tied to the date that you stop working). By the way, the tax is already taken out of the paid parental leave fortnightly payments -- you will see in the letter that they send to you exactly how much you are getting and how much tax is being taken out. :)

I did that, I took my holiday leave and started my paid parental leave after that, because Alize was 2wks early I ended up having him before my maternaty leave started and was still receiving holiday pay IYKWIM.
