Topic: Help, what should I do.... Posted: 19 January 2009 at 10:39am |
Mia has just done a HUGE black poo. It looks completely black like the first couple of poos were, but its not same texture. I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary, I am on antibiotics but other than that my diet is pretty normal. Mia doesn't look sick, isn't crying any more than normal and doesn't have a temp.
I've just got off the phone with well child and their advice is to wait and see what the next couple of poos look like.
Should I wait? I'm a little freaked out and want to go to the afterhours.

Might be the antibiotics, might be anything. If she doesn't seem unwell in anyway then I'm confident she will be just fine.
More worrying would be normal colour, with blood in it.

Nah it doesn't smell bad.
She is her normal self . She has been smiling and feeding all morning.

I haven't taken any supplements or vitamins.
Well child said that my breasts are probably bleeding, but I'm sure I'd notice blood pouring out of my breasts. Especially since I pump once a day.
Thanks for your comments ladies, may-be I should wait and see.

Personally I believe that if there is something wrong with your baby, you just KNOW it. If you know what I mean. If you are worried, then take her to the doctor. Just cos we are all saying she's probably fine, don't talk yourself out of being concerned if you really truly are.
My little one had bright green poo a while ago and it freaked me out big time. I called well child and they went through with me anything different he'd eaten previously and turns out it was grape juice and blueberries!
Anything you eat could turn your wee ones poo different colours too I think. Spinach? Red wine? Had either of them recently?

I'd be inclined to guess it was the antibiotics, and give it a day or so to see what happens - especially because she is not distressed.

Thanks ladies,
I ended up taking Mia in to the afterhours and they sent me to emergency in Wellington to monitor Mia. Everything turned out fine. The doctors suspect that a cyst burst in my breast causing a big bleed. Todays poos are still black but with a bit of mustard colour.

Ashlee's nappies were really dark/black for a long time and my nipples were bleeding for the whole 6 weeks she fed! When she went onto formula, that all cleared up. Obviously, that colour was all I knew but that would be pretty scary to see such a dramatic colour change. Sounds like Mia's coming right now can't wait to meet her!!!

Kirsten it was a huge shock seeing the black poos. Luckily she is doing fine now.
Can't wait to see your wee bump.
