It's the poor child in the photo I feel sorry for. I wonder who gave permission (or not!) for the photo to be used on the card??

Would have found it funny if they hadn't used a pic of a real child

IMO - the difference between Ginga jokes and blonde jokes is that blonde jokes mock a certain stereotype - the bottle blonde woman who is a bit dim.

Whereas ginger jokes are founded on the notion that people with red hair are somehow sub-standard / repulsive / 2nd class citizens.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not some uber-PC nut (quite the contrary!) - but when you really think about it like that, I find it astonishing that 'ginger discrimination' has allowed to become so mainstream!

Just my 2c worth!

(Also should clarify - I'm not a ginger - I'm a 'dumb blonde' )

One thing I really dislike though, is the use of the word "ginga", it is "ginger"!

As an adult (and a redhead) it doesn't bother me and yeah is pretty funny. But the thought of kids reading it just makes my heart break.... I don't want my little boy (or any other kids with gorgeous red hair) reading that while they're out shopping.

England is heaps worse than NZ though, they're awful about people with ginger hair.

hehe sorry guys- im thinkin its kinda funny too...probably wouldnt if i wasnt married to a redhead, but i would have bought that for him for christmas if it was in NZ tbh- but hes an adult and can laugh at that. i can see how some people would find it a bit offensive, but its how you take it really. i agree with it being similar to a blonde joke thing- blondes are steriotypically "dumb" or "bimbos" or whatever, although we know thats not true at all! so whats the difference really?

i agree tho- if it wasnt a photo and a cartoon or something instead then i would have been taken better by the public.

JMHO..

They really are shocking here in the UK with the widely accepted mocking of people with red hair here, its awful, plus I just dont get it. A part of me thinks that card is quite funny, for an adult who can take a joke but if any little red head kiddo saw that it would be truly heartbreaking so do agree with it being removed from sale because we as a society should be more concerned with protecting the young and innocent, than having a laugh.

just have to add my 2 cents, have we really become so pc that we cant laugh at ourselves. Storm in a teacup. and would a 'kid' actually get the joke, I would imagine you are more likely to give it to someone who is of the age to understand its a laugh. or who isnt so PC they would get offended

I think it's funny in an adult kinda way - like I would buy it for my red head sister from a shop that sold gifts and quirky things (ie where children don't tend to be shopping!). But this was being sold by Tescos. That's the bit that I think was really stupid - in a company that large, how many people did it go through before it hit the shops?

I agree with kiwikid, I think people are way meaner about red hair in Aussie and the UK than they are in NZ (as in, beyond the point of funny).
