Topic: Constipation(yep another output question) Posted: 26 December 2006 at 7:22pm |
Now that they have had nothing but formula for a few days the girls 'output' has started to change which I expected, but Sienna seems to have a bit of trouble actually getting it out (lots of straining and facials and a bit of squawking). I know there is something to do with brown sugar that can help fix it but am loathe to try that coz of the allergies thing, are there any other tried and true fixits?

cooled boiled water and brown sugar is the one you will be thinking of but boiled water on its own works too, just not as quickly and you need to get a bit of water into her.

Just give her cooled boiled water in a bottle, it will probably help her as the heat starts picking up too.

I know you are probably loathe to visit your GP again after so many visits already, but a couple of other mums I know have used Lactulose with some success... I think you can get it without a prescription, but it's probably cheaper (or free) with a script if you can be bothered.

Oh that's okay Jax, I think Emma was saying the other day that they have a weekly appointment with their GP every Wednesday

We've been using lactulose....cooled water (that's almost harder to get down than the sodding lactulose!!!) and also very dialuted plum juice (which is a hit with Maddie).
Lactulose is free with a script if you want to try that.

LMAO Busymum, some weeks it blimmin feels like it!
I took Mercedes to the doc up here in Whangarei today to get a repeat on her Losec (reflux med) and the doc is more worried about her than Sienna coz at least Sienna is getting something out, Mercedes hasn't been for a few days and her tummy is quite bloaty and she is pretty irritable. She gave me a script for some stuff called Coloxyl which is specially designed for babies - till I get it home and discover it has artificial chocolate and caramel flavours which are no good for the girls with the allergy probs they have! Grrrrrrr! I told her about the allergies - must admit I thought at the time that the doc was a bit suss when she said she'd never heard of babies taking Losec before
Will try the cool boiled water tho, with the humidity up here atm if nothing else it will help keep them hydrated.

we're going through what seems like all of the formulas! Currently on Karicare Sensicare. We have a tin of the Novalac Constipation formula left over if you want to try that? It retails for $35 and I have it on Trade me for $20. The GP swears by it, but it did nothing for Caitlin.

We have tried the Laco stuff with no success. It does not make her go any more often - one hint I had been offered which is probably no use for you but to feed them Watties Organic Oats with Figs and Sultanas almost without fail when I feed Olivia that she goes poos by the next nappy change.
Doctors are flipping hopeless as in plunket - they have no interest in helping me really. Olivia has been severly constipated since she was 3 1/2 months old!

DILUTED Prune juice is real good. Very natural. Half bought prune juice to half boiled water. Works a treat - Give her some every day til everything works - in fact keep it up!

Glenfelik, I know exactly how you feel!
We didn't get Caitlin's "constipation" issues sorted until we were in the local hospital having her jabs done (she reacts to them so GP can't do them). The Paed saw her go and saw how upset she got because it was so big, he suggested she might be allergic to Casein, so recommended Karicare HA (Hypoallergenic, 100% whey based) and now she is totally fixed and goes everyday just like she should
All of the GPs and especially Plunket were all useless! We even went to a Homeopath, still nada!
It wasn't really constipation as it wasn't dry and she was still peeing heaps so it was more of a diegestive issue and her remembering how much it hurts to go-so she would hold herself until she really HAD to go. But I'm really p'd off that it took 4 months before someone said to put her on a special formula (Plunket said to keep her on the standard ones, so I'd been through pretty much all of them). My poor lil' girl had to go through so much discomfort
