Topic: Solids and routines Posted: 24 January 2007 at 12:54pm |
Hey ladies
I need to pick your brains over something…again!
We were advised by Plunket to gradually reduce her formula and up her food intake. I don’t want to keep bothering my plunket nurse, so I thought I would ask you guys.
We are currently giving Caitlin 200mls of formula 4 times a day, cereal in the morning (at 8am feed) and ˝ a jar of solids twice a day (at 12pm and 4pm feeds), we only give her formula at her 8pm bedtime feed, so she’s on the 3 meals a day that is recommended for her age. (She was on 250mls with half a jar once a day until about a month ago and we have gradually increased the food, decreased the formula).
So the plan is for next week to drop her formula down to 180mls (still on 4 feeds), continue with the cereal at 8am and give her 1 whole jar of food at 12pm and again at 4pm, and only formula at 8pm (with drinks of water in between). We’ll do this for another month or so.
What I need to know is what should she be having next when she’ll be almost 8 months old?
150mls with 1 1/2 jars twice a day and her cereal for brekkie?
At this age should she still be on the 4 hourly routine? Or something different? She never complains if she’s a bit late for her feeds and is still sleeping 11+ hours at night, so I’m wondering if she could/should go a bit longer between feeds?
What does/did everyone else do?
Does anyone know of any books/websites that give more info about routines and solids for the older babies? I could only find info for starting solids, hardly anything for 6 months+
Thanks heaps... again

at 8mths rhiannon went to 3 feeds a day..(she did that herself)
and i had her on 3 solids a day....b/fast was fruit and farex or toast
lunch was a sandwich or anything finger food and dinner was whatever we had or i made her, her own dinner.
they say by nine months she should be having her solids before her bottles and only be on 3 bottles a day...but hey whatever is working for you is good....and besides every baby is different...and if your routine is working for you now why change it

Help! Mya has no routine with feeds, ive simply been demand feeding but my goal was to start her on solids at 6months (which is next week) now thats its approching she seems happy and full still on breast milk and im happy to continue and even fell a little sad at the thought of stopping. Is there any reason to Start solids yet? whats the latest recommended age to start?

Yeah every babe is different. Ashlee's on 3 meals a day already, and each meal is anything from a third of a jar/can to the whole thing. Plus the usual 4 bottles (3 x 200mls with solids and then 250ml at 7pm - no solids).
I've never heard of reducing the formula, but sounds logical. I reckon whatever works, go with it. It's all a learning process, based on trial and error!

Myamy, you should be starting her at or about 6mos, but don't worry about the bfing. That will still be the most part of her diet for the next 2-3mos and then you can keep on bfing well past her 1st birthday (or even 2nd) if you really want to. Basically from about 6mos she won't be able to get all her nutrition needs solely from milk.

I hadn't heard about *having* to reduce the amount of formula, Erin is still taking 200mls 4x a day, and has solids 3x a day, almost always the whole jar / tin.

*hmmph*
So I was a bit confussed when I read what everyone else was doing (especially Kirst as our girls are pretty much the same build and age) so I called Plunketline and *dun dun duuuunnn* got told something completely different AGAIN!!!!!!! damn them!
*bangs head on desk*
SO - I had a chat with good old Mumsie (as she is looking after Caitlin 4 days a week) and she said that with me and my sis she kept us on the 9oz (approx 250mls) until we were off formula altogether and let us be the judge over how much we wanted to drink and slowly increased the amount of solids until we were old enough to have a proper dinner. Staying with the 4 hourly feeding routine.
SO - From Monday (the day we were going to change things) we're leaving Caitlin on 200mls and will offer her the whole jar of solids and let her decide how much she wants (after her bottle of course!) adn if after a while she is clearing the whole jar and still wants more we'll up it to 1 1/2 jars.

Aren't mums good sometimes Toni !! I'm really glad that's what she suggested, I was a bit foggy headed when I replied so sorry I wasn't more helpful. I'm really sure that Caitlin will let you know if she wants less, with both food and formula, and don't forget, mummy knows best (as confusing as it may feel)

That sounds pretty good, Toni. And definitely go by what Caitlin wants - she'll soon let you know if she's had enough or wants more!!!! With Ashlee, it depends what I'm giving her. She's definitely got favourite foods already.
You're right, our two are pretty similar in build and age and what we're doing is perfectly ok (in my eyes!!) and works for her. I actually never thought of increasing the bottles to 250ml (I followed the tin on that one - but then again, I think different formula tins also say different things ), only upped her final bottle to that when she started waking at 5.30am and we thought she might need just a little more to tide her out til 7am.
Just to add - a Plunket nurse I spoke to when we first were introducing solids said you can never overfeed them. I guess that's true because they'll just stop eating when full, or spuke out what they didn't want.
