Topic: Flying questions Posted: 05 September 2008 at 9:48am |
I am getting really excited now not long till we leave to go to OZ!!!! But I have a few questions for those in the know and those that have flown recently please.
-
The liquid allowance - I am flying with Josh he will need a bottle on the plane for his ears. Can I fill it up before we leave or is it best to wait till after we have been through customs??? I am taking some formula packets with me so will only need milk.
-
Pacific Blue - any advice??
-
At AK airport will have have to check my stroller?? And if so will they give me one to use for Josh - I don't really want to have 2 children walking around and then them going in opposite directions.
-
Brisbane airport, any advice??? I am lucky (and yes it is lucky ) that I am an Oz passport holder so I know I will get to go through a much faster customs line. But after that, will they have a stroller I can use???
-
Any advice of what to take on the place with me???

Hey Becks,
We have just got back after flying Pacific Blue, they were really good, girls on the plane were very snotty though! Anyway, take a pen because they wont let you use theirs anymore (for the forms you have to fill out).
You will have to buy the milk once you are through customs as your not aloud any liquids at all. Check though with them about baby bottles - but we saw a lady have to throw EVERYTHING out.
Also if you have lipstick/lipgloss you are taking on the plane you have to have it in a clear bag.
Cant help on the stollers though sorry, mind you I did see everyone taking their own on?
There is heaps of changes going on at the moment at Brisbane airport, so just make sure you read the signs clearly as you might have use to go one way but now you go another way etc.

I wont be able to answer all the questins but I spoke to AirNZ about our fiji trip and they said that apparently we can take hot food and drink etc with us on the plane specially for children. The stuff on plane will reheat or heat any bottle etc...as well as wash them for you (wont sterilize tho).
Never flown with Pacific blue overseas so not sure what planes are like...I only flew domestic
I checked in our stroller and car seat both times and I dont think that they willlet you take it all the way to the gates...but I think its unfair so may be give AKL Airport a call (as its not upto the airlines) and see what they say.
Brisbane - sorry only ever travelled with DH not with Z
On the plane I always take some of those chewy fruit lolli things as that helps with ear....specially for Andrew. I found that Z didnt have any trouble on the plane with her ears while landing or taking off....
But just in case. A coloring book and some crayons, their fav book to read, a few small toys to keep them accupied for three hours. I am doing a backpack for Z with those things in them.
Any other ideas from ppl will be helpfull for me too...

oh my gosh you have buy your meals on flight? I thought that it was only a domestic thing....WOW.
Was just checking their website and it doesnt give much info on things that you wanna know Becks...why not give them a call??
ETA - their webpage says No Bassinette or carseat is allowed on board but nothing is mentioned about the buggy? And also doesnt mention that you cant take your own drink for kids just says bring a bottle if you wish to bottle feed!??

We just flew from Welly to AKL 2 weeks ago when Amy had an ear infection (yes, great timing!). DH came up with the inspired idea of giving her a chuppachup lolly pop to suck. She had never had one before and was SOOOO excited. She never even noticed that her ears were sore. We gave her one on the was back and it worked just as well.

Liquids for babies are allowed but you have to declare that you have them before you go through screening.
I don't know how things work with PB, but I don't think you *have* to check your stroller - they might let you check it at the gate, then you pick it up again with the rest of your luggage.
We had one that folds up small enough to go in the overhead bins, so it solved that problem for us.
As for what to take on the plane, small things - and new stuff that they haven't seen before so more exciting. And snacks!

how about taking formula sachets and getting water once on the plane? Or those s26 cartons....might be ok as they are packadged rather than home made?
As with the stroller....totally depends on the mood of the person at checkin. Sometimes we have been allowed to keep an umbrella stroller right to the gate (think that was pacific blue in akl) other times its been take off us at check in. But I have always been able to use the airport one and I imagine with 2 kiddies your odds are heaps better.
On our last flight (tom was just one) he wasnt too keen on having his dummy for take off and landing and his ears hurt. We just had his water bottle there and offered him sips every now and then and tolerated the screams in between. It was so much easier when he would just fall asleep on the boob.
Also, are you taking a car seat? different airports have different policies on giving you a plastic bag to put them in. AirNZ in chch do, AKL doesnt, pac blue doesnt.

We didn't have any issues with taking Ashlee's drink bottle on board. I did make sure I had it in a clear bag so that I could show them I had it.
You will have to check the stroller, but you can take it with you to the gate if you want to. They'll fold it up and put it with the luggage at the very last minute.
At the Brisbane end, they don't leave the stroller very clear for you to find. It's with all the oversized things, it doesn't come out on the conveyor belt (which is ANNOYING!) so ask someone to direct you as soon as you get through to get your luggage. We had to carry Ashlee through most of the other side before we got to the stroller.
Take LOADS of snacks for the boys because they ran out of food by the time they got to the back of the plane where they had seated us. We took crackers, Ash's fave lollies, little pottles of fruit, mini biscuits. Also took colouring books, pencils, portable DVD player. The flight will go quickly because you spend so much time making sure the kids are entertained!

The liquid allowance - I am flying with Josh he will need a bottle on the plane for his ears. Can I fill it up before we leave or is it best to wait till after we have been through customs??? I am taking some formula packets with me so will only need milk. - you are allowed a bigger allowance on the liquid thing for infants. For your bottle I would not fill bottle till you are thru to the departure lounge - there are cafes after customs (duty free) that will give you hot and cold water or heat the bottle for you. Also I would suggest taking snacks on the plane for the boys as I don't think they feed them anymore and so good to have them on hand for the flight.

Pacific Blue - any advice?? sorry can't hel haven't flown with them
-
At AK airport will have have to check my stroller?? And if so will they give me one to use for Josh - I don't really want to have 2 children walking around and then them going in opposite directions. i had to check in the stroller both times. First time (Rhylz was 4 months old) they got me a stroller, second time they sent me somewhere to get one but we waited like half an hour and still didn't get one so just did without

Brisbane airport, any advice??? I am lucky (and yes it is lucky ) that I am an Oz passport holder so I know I will get to go through a much faster customs line. But after that, will they have a stroller I can use??? I have been there but can't remember it all that well. Nz or Oz passport holders get to go thru quicker as they don't have to have a visa. As for a stroller you will find you won't get one till you get thru to the pick up your bags place and by then you can pick up your own stroller,if there is a long wait you can ask someone to get our stroller from over sized for you.
-
Any advice of what to take on the place with me??? I presume you mean plane and as I said before snacks, chippies, buscuits. Toys - not loud ones but ones they like, if they like books they are always good - perhaps buy a new book from the bookshop in departures especially for the trip so its all new and exciting - and hopefully keep their attention more
So excited for you I am hanging out for another holiday - will have to wait though

I took 4 bottles on the plane with me (cos I knew getting milk in fiji at midnite would be a mission. They didn't even look in my bag, let alone ask about how much I had ( i had about 250 ml in each bottle) They just asked if I had any food etrc and I said yep baby food and milk and they just waved me through, sweet as. Same as customs in and out of both countries. I tokk food for Charlotte as Jake got a meal but not her - although they gave me baby cereal for her on flight over.
-
Pacific Blue - any advice??

When you check in your luggage, check in your stroller, but you can keep it. You can take it straight up to the plane. They may take it at the gate, and pop it in the hold later or you may be able to take it on had hand luggage and it isn't counted as part of your allowence either. We did it both ways, depends ot he staff. I wouldn't rely on getting an airport stroller and they are damn handy if your flights get delayed (like ours did)

you can get your stroller straigt away when you leave the plane, esp if it is in your hand luggage.
Any advice of what to take on the place with me??? |
I packed a small backpack for each of the kids (although hindsight probably only really needed one) had some snacks, small puzzles, sticker books and drawing paper and pencil, book, matchbox cars and teddy. A real life saver!

oh another thing is - ask when checking in if the flight is full if not can they block out the seats next to you so you can have more room.

Yeah I asked PB l;ast week how full the flight was and she said not packed yet so I have every chance of getting a block of seats to myself.
