Topic: Oil fin heaters are dangerous! Posted: 17 September 2008 at 1:49pm |
so, yesterday at home Sam was playing nicely in the lounge. All of a sudden, he pulled an oil fin heater over on top of himself. (The heater wasn't on)
He was upset and I thought it fell on his hand, so I gave him to his dad for comfort and went back out to pick up the heater.
Little did we know..
The heater didn't get his hand, it got his big toe.
After pulling off his (red) sock and finding the blood to be pouring out of a great big gash where his toenail used to be, we realised that the heater had crushed his toe between the carpet and the sharp edge of the fin.
We rushed him to the emergency room to be told that the bone was completely shattered and his toenail had been cut right through and the open wound had gone right down to the bone!
He is now bandaged up and recovering but he's doing better than we expected. His toe should heal fine and the doctor said he will probably even get the nail back.
Guess who was jumping on the bed and laughing today!
You can watch them as closely as you can, but kids are always going to give you heart attacks!
The offending heater is now OUT of there and narrowly escaped a one way trip to the dump!

Oh, poor wee Sam. I'm pleased he's ok though.
I couldn't agree more about oil fin heaters. I'd never buy one with exposed fins, especially the larger/heavy ones.
My nephew when he was a wee bit older than Sam did something similar he had his arms around the heater and was leaning on it and it fell over with him on top and one of the fins (with the weight of the heater and his weight combined) cut the top of his finger off (from just above the top joint). My sister took him and the finger top to A & E and he had surgery to have it reattached and is fine now. I don't trust them - kids+oil heaters are IMO a bad combo.

Your poor little man, hope he gets better soon.
We have a 3 fin heater for the bedroom, which will go to bubs room (when she has her own room). We use a gas heater in the lounge, will have to get a grill so bubs wont go close to it.

Oh no! Glad to hear he will be fine.
Thanks for the warning - I have a big oil heater in our bedroom which we aren't using, so will move out to the garage - I thought since it wasn't hot it wouldn't be a hazard!
