My company currently pays for my sovereign surgical care health insurance. I've had the insurance for three years and not made a claim.

Going on maternity leave I have the option to keep the insurance by paying for it myself - it would cost $70 per month for myself and for baby.

$70 a month is quite a lot on our single income. I'm not so worried about dropping the insurance for myself but how many of you feel that medical insurance (surgical care only) is important for bub?

You may want to check out other providers and see if you could get a better deal.

I think health insurance is important. Especially for bubs because if you get them insured when they are born then any health issues can be covered, whereas if you wait and they develop something its classed as a preexisting condition and often won't be covered.

Good example is my hubby, he was covered prenatal and he needed eye surgery when he was 1 and 3. If we switched providers now his eyes wouldn't be covered.

It's also handy for things like gromets. Lots of kids need them these days and the public health system is slow which so isnt cool. My cousins daughter is on the waiting list for gromets and has been for quite a while, her talking is really bad cause she just can't hear, if she had insurance she would have had it done already

Insurance is a hard one.. I would say if you can afford to carry on with it. If you have not had any claims it might be ok but if you have had any pre existing issue they will not carry them over or they will be a stand down period.. My cousin is in the middle of a debate at the moment with his health insurance company over an issue like this.

Good old insurnace - damned if you do damned if you dont

DEfinately check out other providers as well.  We pay $100 per month for me, DH and Tom and I think the new bub will be free.  Like the others have said I think it is critical to have it for a littlie as waiting for grommets or tonsillectomy with a baby in pain would be horrible!

We had to make the same decision that you are now facing.
We chose to carry on with the insurance and then included our bub. It is the best decision we have ever had to make....our son was faced with allergies and asthma. It has covered all our Paed appointments to date....
We use Southern Cross and I am now lucky enough to be back at work and work covering it

DH's work covers ours, for both of us and up to 4 kids. We have general cover and I am sure when we were paying it it wasn't as much as $100 per mth. I have had cover all of my life and I think it is really important. I may never need it for more than GP visits etc but if I were to get really sick then at least I don't have to add the stress of finding the money for treatment etc to the worry about the illness. Same goes for DH and our children.

Do it. WIthout a doubt it is the best decision I have ever made. Our premiums are $175 a mth for me plus four kids (you only pay for 2 kids, the rest are free) to have full comprehensive cover and there hasn't been a month since the gremlins were born that our claims have been less than our premiums.

The gremlins both had their second grommets op each last week plus adenoids at a cost of $2985 per child, that's $6K I don't have so if we hadn't had insurance they would be sitting on a public waiting list for 18 mths + while having 2-3 trips a week to Starship outpatients for suctioning and treatment and risking further hearing damage.

PS. $70 a mth sounds like a lot for surgical only for you and one bub, I'd definitely shop around but make sure you discuss pre-existing conditions and whether or not they'd be covered if you switched coz often they're not.
