Ok I just showed Conor, and he thought that it might be a smoke trail from an Orion (airforce plane).

I like the idea of a UFO.

It's over Porirua (so fairly well populated area).   We are in the flight path for Wellington airport but the smoke trail is in the totally wrong place unless the plane crashed... and we would've heard about that by now.

Looks like it is just a typical boeing trail, must be colder where the clouds are which is what is keeping it around longer. Ever notice they trail off in empty sky and stick about a bit longer in slightly cloudy sky?
