HAHA!

Ladies try living in Dunedin, which feels like Antarctica! Has your toilet frozen over? Mine has!

We have to leave taps dripping so the pipes dont freeze over in the laundry for the washing machine. And a tennis ball in the loo...

We live in a Valley, and being students cant really afford to have the heaters going much, so we are really feeling it down here!

Spare a thought for the students....sigh...

All depends, but if you are on a crazily tight budget like we are and need blankets, then your local op shop/sallies/St Vincent De Paul shop will always have some nice wooly/warm blankets at a bargain price, and then you are giving some $ to a good cause too. Depends how you feel about second hand stuff.

We got a few bargains last month when we spotted that our local St Vincent De Paul had some ex-hospital cell blankets, so we snapped them up. They are nice and warm, but still quite light.

So hope that helps!

Sorry it does get colder I find it coldest when its starting to get to spring.

NZpiper I've got used to the winters down here now too I'm still wearing a a shirt and a jersey over the top

I find the cold down here gets to your bones were as up north it sits on your skin.

Bumblefoot I know I wouldn't be able to handle a Dunedin winter.

Thats why I was a cleaver student and go to Massey , but even here in Palmy today it is sunny and my house is freezing so the fire hasn't gone out.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

You know you have issues when your toilet freezes! Haha that's classic!

We had a flat here that was warmer sitting outside when it was snowing (under a cover obviously) than it was inside!

We've had our heater or fire going for about a month now, pretty much constantly, and electric blankets every night. I'm not looking forward to our power bill

And the condensation, gross! Finally got a scoopie for the windows, but before that we had constant condensation for 2 weeks, and our toilet paper had to be kept in a plastic bag because it was getting soggy from the dripping south wall. Oh yay, and its only June!

i actually enjoy the chch winters frost is pretty and i love snow and being from Invercargill originally snow rarely settles there so love being able to go out and play in it even tho it hasnt snowed this year yet. I do kind of miss the rain tho it hardly ever rains in chch where as in invers i use to love extra blankets on the bed listening to the rain and wind outside. Man maybe i should move back home i miss the extreme weather.

I always think summer should be hot and winter should be really cold with snow hail rain and wind otherwises its not winter can always put on more clothes and blankets to keep warm

Oh yes it gets colder - sorry!
How cold you feel at home would depend on the kind of place you live in - we are in a 1920s house with high ceiling and polished wooden floors and it gets really cold! (hey, but it looks good!) We've had a heat pump installed as during winter we need something on 100% or we freeze (that and I hate layers!). Even in Auckland, at the height of winter it gets very close to 0 degrees - you'll see the very thick frost (that almost looks like snow) covering the ground when it happens!

ETA to try and make ramblings make sense

Okay NOW I'm cold! 8 degrees today in Palmy North and I've had the heater on for 1/2 the day! Now I'm thinking "uh-oh" are we in for a cold winter, cause it's not usually this cold this quick.

I've lived in CHCH all my life too (up until this year) and I reckon the winters get worse every year. Last year was particularly bad, although I had spent the previous 2 years living in Melbourne where the winters weren't too bad. But when it snowed in June last year, I thought, yup, its going to be a horrible winter! Now I live in sunny Nelson! What a difference! I mean, it gets cold, sure, but the sun comes out most days which makes all the difference. Today has been the exception - haven't seen the sun at all and have had to have the heater on most of the day, but most of the week, I've had the doors and windows open letting the sunshine in! I agree that being preggers and having internal 'insulation' helps some, as I usually feel the cold, but at the moment, I get by wearing T-shirts at the moment!!

Far out it's cold today, and according to the weather news on the NZ Herald website it's going to get colder, more rain, thunder storms, and more wind... This old villa is freezing, I've already shut the curtains and put the heater on...
