Topic: My name is Kandice.. Posted: 01 March 2009 at 7:07pm |
and i have a shopping addiction.
I need ideas to help me to stop spending.
This weekend alone iv bought a $170 external hard drive, a CD/DVD wallet $25, a pair of bobux boots for Kylah, A Guitar (and i dont know how to play) 24 pairs of socks $30, A weight loss detox programme, a messy mat for under Kylahs table, and a meat loaf tin.
What can i do to stop spending my savings! I buy stuff and then get bored and want to buy more stuff.
Help!

Ohhh, TM is dangerous. Can you turn it off in your browser so that you can't access the site?

Okay, I'm going to be blunt - kandice you have said several times that you spend too much money (or that your dp does). you've said you ned to cut down about four times and started threads about doing so.
in reality to stop spending, you have to STOP SPENDING. there is no easy way to do these things at all. you need to get some willpower. Ask yourself befoer you spend anything. "Do i really need this - as in, will something terrible happen if I don't buy it?. if your answer is no, then don't buy it.

Look for the underlying problem ....... the problem is not the spending it is WHY you are spending, what void are you filling by buying the "stuff"?

I've got the same problem. You get bored while the wee ones aslepp. You go on computer straight to TM site and look. Then you see something and justify it to yourself its cheap and you need one next thing you know it turns up on your door step. I bought two pairs of jeans two weeks ago in the dame style because i told myself I needed them and they were cheap. You can't cure it but you can manage the addiction.
Do you pay by credit card or bank deposit??? If by card give it to someone else to look after or cancel the bank deposit setting on your internet banking
We should start a club. "Trade Me annoymous". Its a disease I tell ya.

Lol - I so hear you on the shopping addiction!
Although - what I am doing now is thinking hard about things because all this recession talk is scary!
Maybe when you go to buy something you need to stop and think - if I lost my job because of the recession how will Kaylah be - would she prefer these boots now or having the money there for backup IF I lost my job.
When you buy stuff do you think that you shouldnt be doing it? I know I never use to think about it at all, then a few months I really started questioning my buys - but still brought. NOW Im questioning and only half buying!

I think most of us have been there, buying stuff we don't really need & then feel a need to buy more.
Well time to get selfish (I am this year) start saving for big things you want like a trip or new car etc.
Get rid of all c/cards, HP etc.
I also like doing trade me, but if I want something I will try to sell something, & its a good way to clean out he cupboards & up date the kids stuff.
I guess at the end of the day it comes down to if you are happy spending/wasting money on stuff you don't need or would you rather have money for things you do need.

I think the way the economy is these days we shouldn't be too care free with our money. If you had the means to carry out this addiction without much consequence then I don't see the harm really. But if it means putting a financial strain on your family then you really should find alternatives to help combat or even out your spending. Great idea about selling things on Tradme....that way all you're really doing is swapping goods. I hardly ever buy things for myself..so am the complete opposite!. I always make sure the Kahtrell has what he needs, and most definitely put him first. If there's something that I WANT....not NEED, I always think will the gratification be short term or long term......and is there something that Kahtrell needs that is more important.

I dont have any HPs or loans, and i dont have a credit card.
Iv opened a bill account for me, and wednesday im going to open a savings account at a different bank. Im not going to have a cashflow card or internet banking for it.
Yay.
I buy lots of things because it makes me happy, untill they arrive then i get over it and need to buy more to make me happy again..
Horrible cycle..

Shopping is great for instant gratification - the problem is, it doesn't last long! I used to shop ALOT until DH proposed and then it was all on saving for the wedding. Admittedly the addiction just moved from general shopping to wedding shopping!
Saving for the wedding did however teach me to save and to question all purchases I made. After a loong engagement of 2 & half years and a year after the wedding, I would say I am a reformed shopaholic! My new saving goals are for baby things (am still only TTC but for when we get a BFP) and for lots of work done around the house and it is going really well. For me, I always need a savings goal to aim for, otherwise I would just spend what I have on things I don't really need or want.
Good idea about the savings account with a different bank and no eftpos card/internet banking - it looks like it might have to be cold turkey for you!
