Topic: Cleaning the BBQ Posted: 22 December 2008 at 10:51am |
We've never owned a BBQ but when MIL moved into the granny flat on our property earlier this year her BBQ was moved to our patio.
We're having a BBQ for Christmas and I mentioned to MIL that I need to clean it and she said that BBQs don't actually need to be cleaned you just heat them up, pour some oil on and scrape off any leftover food before you use them. This sounds a bit gross to me (although I am possibly a bit OTT when it comes to cleanliness around food), I know my parents always remove the plates from their BBQ once it's cooled after use and wash them in the sink but from the sounds of things MIL never did that. I asked when it was last used and she said January 2007. I told her considering that I'd rather clean it thoroughly before using it.
So (admittedly I haven't checked it yet but) there's 2yo food scraps on the BBQ. Is it ok to use oven cleaner on it?
How do you clean your BBQ?
I'm scared to even take the cover off but I really need to do something about it this afternoon.

We don't throughly clean our BBQ, but we do heat it and run and onion over it, this removes all excess....could be a good place to start?
Good luck!

We clean ours really well at the beginning of each summer. DH did it a couple of weekends ago and just got hot soapy water and a metal brush and gave it a good scrub.
Then he oiled it up over the heat to make sure it was 'seasoned' for the next use.
Edited to add: January 2007 - Ewww!

That makes sense Julia, the carbonated water in the beer would help to lift any remaining greeblies.
Otherwise, we do what everyone else has said

DH and his mates turn the BBQ on then put a layer of salt on it. They cut a potato in half and use that along with the salt to clean it. Then they pour beer over it which fizzles anything else off. Easy peasy! Looks pretty clean too.

I have only seen dad heat it up and scrape stuff off. A BBQ isnt a BBQ if the plate is super clean, thats what makes it have that yummy taste IMO lol.
He probably cleans it once a year though, actually Im pretty sure he does!

We dont clean ours either.
DH does this:
Turn on the grills, pour some oil over the plates. Cut an onion in half and stick it with a fork then basically wipe the onion over the grill. That helps get all the scum off the plates etc.
Once you've done that just turn the grills off, and wipe over with handy towels. Easy Peasy.

DH doesn't clean ours either except for at the start of each summer. I think it sounds a bit gross too, but I eat it anyway

We brush and burn off the food scraps when we finish using it, then put it away for next time. If you use detergent on it you take off all the seasoning, (same as not cleaning a wok) It's where all the flavouring comes from. BBQ is mega hot so if it is surface clean then heat it up and any buggies are gone. But if you need to, a wire brush or pad and hot soapy water would do the job.You could then season the hot plates with oil, oinion, lemon etc

DH usually heats up the BBQ and then scraps off any bits, he also uses these. I think he bought them at Bunnings or Mitre 10.

Ew, two-year-old food scraps! Most people I know just scrape their BBQs clean, but you do have to be careful - my SIL and BIL (and everyone else there) got a bad case of food poisoning from the BBQ at a party they were at recently - not very nice, and dangerous if you're pregnant!

I took the cover and hood off and was pretty shocked and disgusted by what was on there. Not only 2yo food scraps and built up lard but it was also rusty and corroding not to mention the spiders .
My dad has assured me that using oven cleaner and a steel brush should rid the BBQ of the rust and any other nasties so I'm giving that a go first. Then I'll hose it down rinse it thoroughly then I'll fire it up and try the carbonated water thing to get rid of any risidue and if none of that works I'll rethink our Christmas dinner menu.
I'll post before and after pics tomorrow night.
