Topic: Time Management.....how, what, where? Posted: 21 April 2008 at 11:05am |
Ok, so you probably can all guess that my time management skills are NIL! Ohbaby takes up far too much of my time as I am procrastinating.
Thing is....its getting to me. I am not getting on top of things around the house, and its always a mess and it bugs me. I also have a work from home job that gets done at the VERY last minute. I am about to go back to part time work so I really need to get on top of things!
How do you do it...where do I begin!

I have had this same problem recently
I have just banned myself from looking at the computer until all housework is done for the day - I have had to be hard on myself otherwise nothing gets done
I also only come on here now when Sam is in bed so that I spend more time with her during the day!
Oh, and I have also set a goal to get out of the house everyday (weather depending obviously) for a walk or to the park etc

Lists!
I write a list of a few things I really want to get done with my day (These can be jobs and fun stuff like going to the park) and then restrict myself to OHbaby! visits only when I have crossed things off of there.
I am allowed to pop in when I have stopped for a snack or drink, but only for the duration of that.
I'm a bit of a nutter, but I LOVE crossing things off the lists and feel so virtuous when its all done!

I was good at time management, then it went downhill and now its getting better again..
I write lists. I write a list of all I want to get done during the day and half it. Half for the morning, half for the afternoon. I am not allowed on forums until I have a certain amount ticked off my list.
It seems to work if you stick to it.

I think this is where my time management skills are lacking! I worked to appointments so I didnt have to be organised. Every half hour a new person rocked on in! I dont know how people with say an office job get everything done. I am used to my day being structured for me!
But lists sound good!!! I just need to suck it up and do it right!
Kandice!!!! a 3hour sleep in the morning!!!! OMG, how do you get that out of her??????

You could try and use a certain day of each week to do certain jobs. For instance every thursday night I thoroughly clean and mop the kitchen, bathroom, toilet & laundry.
If the washing builds up (as it tends to do in my house) I pick a night when there's good stuff on tv and I pull the laundry baskets into the lounge and fold and put away everything.
My non-negs every evening before I allow myself to do anything is doing the dishes and wiping down bench tops in the kitchen and tidying the lounge.
I'm only home at night so I guess that makes time management easier as their are less hours to be distracted but when I was home fulltime I had a self created and enforced "roster" which included internet time, cleaning time, meal time & nap time (I miss my daytime naps). I found it good to have certain routines that worked in with playtime too - eg. every afternoon I'd put on a cd, put Michaela in her jolly jumper and fold and put away my washing while signing and dancing for her.

I'm still trying to figure out time management...what with juggling work, uni, gym/working out, Maddie and of course the desparate desire to sleep at some point of time in my life!!!
Think I might have to resort to lists too!

I need a bigger washing basket....that will solve one problem (hehehe....then i wouldnt need to fold so often) actually I would need two. At the moment the one with clean clothes in it gets dumped in a pile on the lounge floor so we can hang out more clothes. and then I get side tracked and the little monster climbs through all the clothes.
I need to get totally on top of everything and start a fresh....but that never happens.

It is hard to feel on top of everything once you have a baby to care for. I feel like I am never organised.
I try really hard to do things when Molly is asleep. When DH gets home from work around about 5pm I get him to bath Molly and this gives me time to potter and get a few things done. He enjoys spending the time with her and I enjoy getting some more things ticked off my list so to speak!

Nikki, I soo understand your problem. But I have managed to get on top of things by making myself do things BEFORE I get wrapped up in the computer.
When I get up in the morning, I feed the kids breakfast and while they're eating I do the dishes (if haven't been done from night before). I then make myself breakfast and while eating it I jump on the laptop. Have a lurk around, post if I have anything to say, check emails etc and then I feel satisfied that I've caught up on everything. Then I do the washing and dress the kids. Then its my shower time and generally just before I have a shower I check the net again. Maybe you could try having ONE day a week without going on the net (Yes, easier said than done), but you'll probably find you have SOOO much time on your hands!
That way, I'm getting things done, but still having my fix of the net inbetween.
I think the above suggestions are really helpful, and if you want to get on top of things, then that's the way to do it.

A day without the net!!!!!!! ARe you insane???????
I cant wait till Tom can feed himself. So much of our day is feeding. Solids can take 45 min by the time I feed him and give him some finger food. Sometimes I can get my food in at the same time...mostly not...then I have to wait till he isnt looking or he wants mine!
Then a bit longer and its bottle time. then its sleep time.....yeah right!!! The amount of time I waste trying to get him to sleep. That is when I do most of my ohbabying! Like right now. He has only had 50min all day so I am really wanting this sleep!
I hope things improve when he settles back down!

I write lists and I also don't turn the computer on until half the list is done.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I did myself a schedule with all the housework/outings evenly spread. That way I could get off my own back if I had done the day's work even though there was still more to do - I could relax. If I kept on until the house was spic and span I'd never stop working!

Lists sound like a great idea. Do you think it would work if I gave one to my husband too? Ha ha
