Topic: Bailey.. Good and Bad..... (long) Posted: 03 February 2006 at 12:23am |
Well Monday(I know its late posting!) Bailey and I finally came home after 3 nights in the hospital! heres what happened....
Last Friday 20th he started vomitting every 10 minutes, so saturday 21st I took him to the doctors, he gave me maxalon(sp) for the nausea and sent me home, well he couldnt keep it down! saturday night he seem to be improving but sunday(22nd) morning, he started vomitting again! then late sunday morning he had Diarrhea and then vomitting again in the afternoon! Monday 23rd morning he wakes up and he was very happy, 10 minutes after being awake his vomitting starts again, so off tothe doctors we go, he just said give him gaviscon and sent us home, well the poor boy couldnt keep it down, tuesday was pretty much the same by wednesday I had had enough and went back to the doctors, so she sent us to thehospital, but when we were there he was a perfect little angel grr so they sent us home! thursday morning he vomitted again and then had diarrhea in the afternoon, Friday(27th) he wakes up and is fine, 30 minutes he is vomitting again, then diarreha again! my mum comes over and at about 12.30 he starts vomitting over her! but after he did that he was happy (LOL) so we go to mumss and about 2.30pm he starts vomitting non stop! I ring the doctors and she said to take him straight up to the hospital! so we have to catch the bus (we have no car!) and he wa vomitting the whole way there! we get to the childrens assessment ward and he was dehydrated (but too much though) so they gave us plasa - lyte (a glucose drink) to give him, we had to give him 10 mls every 5 minutes, it must of tasted grose because he wouldnt take it, I tryed to b/f him but he wouldnt latch and when he did there wasnt any/much milk! at 9pm they decided to admit us, saturday and although being happy and chatty the doctor was still concerned at him not eating so they kept us in! what a day that was! I had to express every 3 hours so we could give it to bailey when he got 'fed up' trying to latch.. but I couldnt express anything! and the times I did I only got 20 mls! the nurse came in in the afternoon and said that if Bailey didnt get much fluid in the next couple of hours they will have to put a tube down his nose to his stomach and feed him that way! he must of heard her because he was trying so had to feed but couldnt, we ended up giving him a bottle of formula! Sunday morming and I was in tears! Bailey still wouldnt feed of me and I thought my milk had vanished (I still couldnt get anything expressing) the doctor saw I was concerned about this and sid for us to say in again and this time she was going to tget the nurses to look after me! (they dont feed you while you are in there! they only provide bread!) so I kept getting milkshakes and for lunch I got.... two savories, a muffin and a banana! then by the time tea came around I was forgotten again, They had given Bailey some vegetabes (they think it was his reflux playing up, and because he wasnt having solids it made it flare up again!) anyway he only had like 3 mouth fulls so.. i ate that :( ... mmmm cold unseasoned vegetables! anyway I got to see a lactation consultant and she helped me.. she was concerned at how he 'wasnt feeding' and how he got 'fed up' so quick! but she said that when he did latch and my milk 'came in' he was happpy and feeding well!
It was about 12pm sunday night and Bailey and I had been asleep for a good couple of hours, Bailey stirs so I pick him up and put him in bed with me (I was going to feed him) But I fall asleep! and poor Bailey FELL OFF THE BED... FACE DOWN!, he screamed and screamed and then a nurse finally came in, she gave me some ice for his head as he had hit it on the side of the bed(metal) on the way down! she then called for a doctor to come and check him out but he was fine! we finally manage to get him to sleep about 1am, he wakes up at 4am and starts screaming again! the nurse comes in and gives him panadol, he settles straight away, I try to feed him but he got fed up again so starts crying again :( the nurse comes back in with some apples, and we gave him those! then I fed him and he wasnt as concerned that it took ages for my milk 'to come in' and he was happy. He fell asleep and we got woken up at 7.20am when Jamie turned up(before he went to work), we saw the doctors at 12pm and she said we could go home. YAY!
I saw a social worker before we were about to leave and she said that it sounds like I was doing everything great, she was concerned that I have no real susport from home(jamie0 but because of his disability she understood. She is going to see if she can get me some home help, someone to come and look after Bailey for a few hours a week! so fingers crossed, Ill keep you updated
Trish
Here are some Photos Taken on Monday when we were at the hospital I took Bailey to the playroom, and christine (A close family friend works there) took Bailey for me while I had a shower, When I got back not only was he covered in paint, but he had done 2 paintings
.. and a couple of him Making them....
Final Result:
Aparently he loved the feel of the paint between his fingers
Also Here are a couple of Bailey Sitting He sat for about 3 minutes - and its getting Longer!

Wow, what a week! You sure had a rough time of it! I'm really glad that you're going to get some help now... it's a shame that it takes something like this before you get the attention you deserve though.

Oh Trish, what a horrible time you have had of it! We went thru a similar thing with Maya when she was about 9 mths. What you were saying about the paedialyte every 5 mins really brought back memories - we had to syringe it into her mouth at 1 minute intervals, my poor little girl. She ended up with the naso-gastric tube tho as she couldn't even keep the paedialyte down.
I found the most frustrating thing when Maya was sick is that we made soooo many trips to the emergency department before anyone would take us seriously. Sounds like you guys did too. You'd think they'd listen - us Mum's do know some things! The ED doctor didn't even want to admit Maya and I refused to take her home so the ygave in and admitted her and the paediatrician took one look at her in the morning and couldn't believe they were going to send her home!
I'm glad to hear that Bailey is feeling better. Also, the hospital should have provided meals for you if you are fully breastfeeding. It's part of the WHO policy on breastfeeding. They don't provide meals for parents of bottle fed babies, or babies who are on solids tho.

i was just going to say the exact same thing Emma - that's slack that you were forgotten!
Sooo sorry to hear about your huge ordeal - must have been a real nightmare for you all to have to handle - isn't it always the way that once you get to the docs bubs always perks up and is just fine!
As for the falling off the bed thing - have been there when Ayja was 6 days old... please don't let guilt get the better of you or anything like that - as i think many mums could attest to here, all have had near misses, fallen asleep with bubs in bed at some time or the other, or dropped bubs etc - these things happen.
The paintings are so neat by the way - very beautiful and colourful - Bailey looks like he had fun doing them too!

oh Trish, that made me cry. I can't believe you had to go through that and when I think of that happening to Joey... :( He had diarrea (sp?) and 39.5 temp. yesterday after jabs and that was bad enough.
Lots of love and hugs to you and your beautiful baby boy.

Thanks Everyone, Bailey is doing much better now thanks, I cant believe how much 'trouble' this little guy has been! He has been constantly sick!!! And so much so that the doctors has put us on a high use card!
Me on the other hand have my post natel depression back I have some good Days, Bad Days, and Really Bad days! and to top things off Jamies work has gone under so he has to finish next week!
Hopefully Ill come right when I go for my holiday on the 25th.
ohh another thing.. Bailey has got himself into a real muddle(plunkets words!) Hes not sleeping and somedays not eating. We are lucky to at anyone time he will sleep for 10-15 mins! other times he will sleep for 3 hours! however he will keep himself awake for 3-4 hours inbetween sleeps (Ive tryed everything to get him back down within 1 1/2 hours, but nothing works!) anyone got any suggestions? Plunket has told me to put him into a routine during the day and it should settle him down at night, well its been 2 days and no luck yet, but will keep you all uptodate
Thanks
Trish

It takes 3 days to make a routine, so stick in there! You can do it!
