Topic: Wjat to Do when baby refuses bottle? Posted: 20 September 2006 at 9:00am |
I am trying to introduce a bottle to my 4 1/2 month old but he will not have a bar of it, chews the nipple for 5 min then has an enormous crying fit. I have tried when he is starving and still no. He will not take breast or formula milk. I know its my fault for leaving it so long but does anyone have any clever ideas that worked for them?

persistance! we had the same trouble trying to get my second onto a bottle. tried for months off and on giving up each time. we tried everything different teats, my milk/formula etc....
anyway... at just after 5 months old she finally took it.
i left the house (so i wouldnt be tempted to feed) and got hubby to do it. we used expressed breast milk, and a teat that the chemist had recommended - tommee tippee.
i dont know what exactly it was that made her "click" but she took it and i was one really relieved and happy mummy so keep trying, stay positive. i know how hard it is and how frustrating it is.
goodluck

I'm really sorry to hear you're having difficulty with this as my DD took to the bottle just fine, but I second what Rachel has said - persistance seems to be the key. Oh, and getting someone else to try feeding them (ie: hubby) seems to work too (as if you are still lactating to any degree they might still smell milk on you). Good luck !

I agree - just keep trying! We had the same problem. We just kept trying him with the bottle every couple of days & endured a few screaming fits until he finally got the hang of it. He still won't take one from me but he takes it no problems from my Mum when she looks after him. She also ended up heating the milk until it was really warm (rather than just tepid) & he seems to prefer that. I've also heard of people warming up or cooling down the teats. Oh & we also bought a faster flow teat so that the milk comes out a bit quicker. Good luck. It's so frustrating isn't it?!

When I started my daughter on the bottle she was a bit fussy at first. So I fooled her! Started her on the breast then slipped the bottle teat in.... never had any probs after that (might have just been a coincidence tho?!?! lol)
Good Luck!

Mine was an evil troll, she would scream and fuss for so long that I eventualy gave up. By 5 mths she would drink water from a cup but she seemed to think that there was only one place milk came from...
We eventually weaned her at 9 mths due to medical neccesity, and even then it took a week of forcibly feeding her a bottle in the hospital.
One thing I did find that helped tho was using the Avent bottles, she wouldn't take the skinny teats, only the fatter flat ones.
Good luck!

'Fraid to say that sometimes it just doesn't work... Quinn never took a bottle. We had many fights about it but he wouldn't give in, even when weaned he reused to drink milk at all and had to get any calcium from dairy products.
BUT fingers crossed for you! Things I tried: breastmilk/formula. Diff bottles. Diff times throughout the day. Waiting til he was starving/or giving it to him when he was not starving and therefore not likely to get too upset? Getting someone else to give it to him. Mixing something yummy in with the milk with the idea of decreasing the amount if he took it (vanilla or teeny bit of milo - WARNING this gets extreme reactions from some mummies so sorry if anyone is offended).
Hope you find something that works for you!!
PS I don't think it is your fault for leaving it so long, some babies are just not that keen!

Mikey never took the bottle even though i started trying when he was just a couple of weeks old. i never tried formula, just expressed milk but he just wouldn't have a bar of it. even now, he has never had a full feed from a bottle, the best he ever did was when i tried him on an avent bottle and he started sucking for a bit but then realised and stopped and then wouldn't take it again.
when my friend weaned her baby onto the bottle she said that for a week her mum had to feed him coz he could maybe smell the milk on her or something. after that it was sweet though.
good luck!! i hope it all works out.

If he's really anti the bottle I would just keep perservering with the cup. Eventually he will get the idea. I know what you mesn about b/f forever tho - I used to have to go and b/f Maya at daycare coz the witch wouldn't take a bottle. They do eventually get the message tho - eventually!

have you had any luck? our son is now 5months old and was happily taking a bottle from my husband every night since he was 2 weeks old - mostly formula. he often took a bottle from my husband even in the middle of the day if i was out which was very nice! BUT.... just recently he came down with a virus and was quite crook - the doctor said basically feed him as often as possible so we did and he missed only 1night without the bottle and he has absoutely refused a bottle ever since.
i have tried cups as well but he buckles his body and screams. i need to go back to work and have been so stressed out about it i am not producing much milk at all! no idea what to do.
should we continue to try a bottle for every feed until he gives??? help please

We've just had the same issue as I started back at work last week - he refused it completely for the first few days, then would take a little and let the rest run out of his mouth. In the end DH ended up letting him lay on his playmat and feed him while distracted and I'm happy to report that he now takes it just fine. Would only have breastmilk, but we tried him on formula yesterday and he took it no problem, so will be giving him a formula feed at nights now. My milk supply just wasn't enough for him so was recommended to try mixed feeding. Like the others have said - perseverance is the name of the game. Good Luck!!

We were really lucky, Madeleine took straight to the bottle at 4 days old, we've been using the Avent ones. We have found she seems to have a bit leak though due to the teat shape being different but she's been happy. We also got a couple of the newer Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles and she dribbles less out with those. It is shaped more breast like and the teat even enlarges like a nipple would.
When I feed her she still tries to turn towards my breast (fast learners aren't they!!) but once she has the bottle in her gob she is happy as.
