I don't know how many of you are aware that I got made redundant from my last job while I was still on maternity leave, and while the silver lining of this was that it is enabling me to stay at home with Erin a lot longer (and have us still be OK financially), I am going to have to look for a job or some kind of work sooner or later (likely after New Year or something). I've decided that I'll probably become a massage therapist, and eventually specialise somehow (not sure exactly), which will mean studying & retraining altogether. That I don't mind, and I'm sure I can manage it along with caring for Erin. Where the "speedbump" might come along is that if I don't actually take ok *another* job at the same time, we will still only be on a single income (for longer than planned). I guess my point is that I'm unsure of whether or not I'd be overloading myself to try and care for Erin, study, and work. Working part time may not be worth it once the cost of childcare is factored in - I can't count on my mum absolutely being able to look after her (even though it could be a possibility). Working full time, well... it comes back to me worrying about managing everything and not ending up in a burnt out heap.

Any advice / experience / suggestions ladies ? *puppy dog eyes*

I'm sorry I don't have any helpful advice but can understand how you feel as I will be in a similar situation in about a year. I was intending on going back to study this year. My situation has changed a bit so after bubs is born I'm going to have to consider how I'm going to approach this.

If I did part time work we wouldn't be eligible for anything from working for families, so if I take what we look like we are going to get + childcare out of our income it's going to hurt more than it's going to help so I'm not sure how I'm going to solve this problem either.

The only thing on my side is I have a bit of time to work things out.

I wouldn't try mothering and studying and working full-time. You'll need more of a break when you get home from work, with a little one, especially if you are still getting up in the nights. That's just me

What are you already skilled in though? Can't you get a job in the same line as you already were?

Jax, I have the two boys and study part-time. When all the assignments are due, exams are coming etc, it is really hard. the usual day to day stuff is fine, and quite relaxing but I had 7 assignments due, Jake's birthday to organise, and taine was sick - a very stressful month or so. No way i could've studied full-time, as for working, studying and having Erin - i really would think twice about this. Not to tell ytou not to, but i know if it was me, When i was studying, I would feel guilty about not being with my kid, and when i was with my kid I would feel guilty about not studying - not to mention everyday things like housework. as for holidays.....

If I were you, I would study. Okay, only one income, but when you finish, you can find a job you love and enjoy. really important I think!

I studied full time with both girls.. what i found was that i did not work though.. i couldn't.. that WOULd be crazy.. there were days and weeks where i would feel like i was sinking - just never getting ahead.

However.. have a look, as you would be a student.. you could get living costs on top of your student loan.. which is non-taxable.. does not affect ird payments, nor does it affect rolands tax etc.. bumps up the balance of your loan but hey - to live it's a small sacrifice. you can get $150 a week. also as a student accomodation supp sometimes goes up. also daycare subsidies thresholds have gone up as well.. the top threshold is $1250 per week gross income now.. as long as income is below that then you qualify for subsidys.

something to think about.

studying with kids can be done.. but you seriously need to find ways to make you life a little easier first.. otherwise you risk going under.. i still have no idea how i did it. I think i was more than slightly insane, but it was worth it.

When I got my last job and started it, I went through six / seven weeks of full on training because it was such a specialised job. I could write you a small novel trying to explain all the things we were trained to do ! In a nutshell, I worked for Fonterra (dairy company), and solved day to day problems for the farmers that supplied us with milk. I could probably work in any old call centre, but I know I wouldn't enjoy it as much, nor would I earn as much as in my last job (because it was so specialised).

As Lizzle has pointed out, I would rather end up doing something I love or at least "like a lot" LOL

Janine - we aren't eligible for any kind of subsidy or supplement from the government because Roland earns too much money *sigh* (whether I am a student or not).

Thanks for the advice ladies, I think I am definitely leaning towards studying and caring for Erin - even though I know when I say this to Roland he will freak out about our finances a bit...

Jax if you were to study fulltime then you would get the $150 no questions asked. Cos its part of your loan and not an allowance it will not effect anything. I am getting it as part of my study over summer school and that little bit extra does help. I also work 11 hours a week and even thou that isn't much it certainly helps the money situation.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

If I take up studying when I have our baby, I certainly will not be using that $150 on student loan. I did vet school for a year and 1/2 and for 6 months of that time I did that 150 a week and my student loan is massive because of it. It's going to take years and years to pay that off. It's not worth it in my opinion unless there is really no other choice.

Yeah, my feelings about the "extra" you can get out of your student loan as a top up are much the same as Stacey's - would rather have to live on a shoe string than struggle to pay off the extra debt. I am pretty sure that we would still manage OK on a single income for a while longer if I study.

Red - thanks for the offer, I might come to you as well once I've had a chat to Jo
