Topic: Moving house with Kids -crazy i know!!!) Posted: 22 March 2006 at 3:52pm |
Ok so we have been looking for a house for a while now - and have already been turned down for one that was pretty much the house of our dreams, there were about 10 of us trying to get that one, but oh well. Anyway, we should hear back today about one that, as far as i know - there is only 1 other couple that have looked at it, as it was the first viewing yesterday, and there were only 2 of us that turned up at all! So finger crossed for us that we get it.
So, with the idea that we will be moving in around 2 - 3 weeks time... or withing a few months if we don't get this house today, what tips can you give me to make moving easier with kids - anything, tips to make it easier on the day, tips for settling them in to a new home whatever. The last time we moved was 4 years ago, and there was only me and mike to think about, and a heck of a lot less furniture to move, no toys or anything like that.
Help me!

congrats i have moved twice with my two girls 1st time when they were 1 1/2 and 5 months then just a few months ago, 3 and 1 1/2.
its a little stressful at times but i found the kids coped so well. it helped to have family around to help out with cleaning and entertaining the girls if needed. but we did end up pretty much doing it ourselves without much help.
we tried to make it special and prepare them. we went and brought some new things for them for the new house.
you will be suprised at how well they "should" cope. just stay positive for them and get them excited.
goodluck.

YAY Moving time!! Congrats on getting the house!! (Home!)
When we moved to Taranaki with Arna my mum looked after her for the weekend then brought her up when we had moved in, she was around 19 months old so didn't really know what was going on. Took her about a week to really settle in and know what was going on.
You could maybe get Paris to choose her room and put Ayja in the other and for Ayja I would set her room up the same as the old house as much as you can. Put the same bed sheets on, if she has things on her dresser put them in the same place etc... just so her room is still the "same".
With Paris I think you should involve her in the packing and unpacking of her room - supervised!! Put music on while you are doing both and make it fun, also maybe say to her its an adventure to move (which it is!)
Oh also Arna helped me to "clean" - she just grabbed a few paper towels and when I was cleaning the windows she would pretend to as well, made it into more of a game for her.
Good Luck!!

To add to all the good advice: make sure you pack a bag with a change of clothes for each kid, pjs, toiletries, and any special toys or whatever they have for going to sleep with. This means at bedtime, if you are not completely unpacked in their rooms you can still put your hands on everything you need to tuck them in happily.

hey thanks ladies - mike has made it a weekday that we move - which means that the girls will both be at daycare while we do most of it - which will be nice - but also kinda weird as they will leave from one house and come home to a totally different one - but i think we'll bring paris back here while we clean and stuff anyway just to say goodbye - this is the only house she's ever known. will be kinda weird to leave it considering all the stuff we've been through here. when we moved in, we were just a couple of 20yr olds, not really too worried about much - now we're pretty much married, have 2 kids, a whole heap of stuff and lead full on lives.

thats great Janine!!! I remember whwen I moved from Dunedin to Taumarunui, my nana was with me and helped me draw a picture of the old house to put on my wall. And then we drew a picture to put on the wall of my new house. I was four.

Congrats on the house. We moved when Kobe was about 1 yr and also just a few months ago. First time he went to my sisters for the day and didnt really care or seem to notice the new house, just more room to crawl. Second time he helped pack him room into the cars then happily went off to my mums for the day. He helped unpack his room later in the day and got to chose where things went so he was happy. Good luck

Yay congrats Janine and Ana! We *should* move before bubs gets here, as we are in a 3 brm but the third bedroom is very much an office so we don't have anywhere to put bubs, but to be honest, I lack the energy to even think about moving...
But I think moving while the girls are at daycare is a great idea. Maya was 15 mths when I moved in here, I moved all the little stuff on the Friday while she was at daycare, then Willie came and helped me move the furniture etc. on the Saturday (we weren't living together then). My Dad took Maya all day Saturday so that by the time she came back her room was all set up and it wasnt too disruptive for her.
I agree that letting Paris choose her own room if at all possible is a good idea, or maybe just letting her decide how she wants her furniture in her room set out? But kids are pretty resilient - Maya got all new bedroom furniture for her birthday last month, and she was in love with it for like 2 days, and then she was over it.
