Hi,

Kylah went back to daycare today, shes almost 17 motnhs old.

In her basket was a letter saying, can you please bring a pillowcase for Kylahs stretcher in the toddlers room to help with trasition etc.

IMO shes not ready for the toddler room at all! She doesnt even walk, the toddles room has like 4 year olds!

I thought the reason of a under 2s room is for exactly that, under twos!!

Would you be upset?

I dont want her in there, at least not untill 20/22 months..

Thats crazy!! In most daycare centres they move kiddies on or around their second birthdays. IMO a 17 month old is nowhere near ready or able to thrive or even cope in an environment where most of the other children are two or older.

If I were you I would be speaking to the centre director as soon as possible to find out why on earth they would be moving her at this early age.

Could it perhaps be a mistake? Could they have popped the note in the wrong basket??

Nope it has Kylahs name on it twice!

I dont want her in there, shes not ready, shes struggling enough in daycare to start with

Ask them about it, however i do know that our daycare started taking the kids for little visits up to the "over-two's" from about that age and the bigger kids were very very good, from that time right through until when they actually began in the area. Mostly the older girls would take the wee ones under their wings and make sure the big boys were nice to them too. the teachers watched them and attended them well and usually a junior school teacher would accompany the littlies.

Sleeping and rest times are an important part of helping them transition so it may be that they are thinking of sometimes trying that too.

It seriously makes it a heap easier when they do transition as they are used to routines, new teachers and the other children.

Another thing we found was that by about 1 and a half, Paris was getting all a bit sick of the baby stuff, she couldn't walk either but could talk really well and figure out stuff far beyond her abilities - her visits up to the big kids space gave her opportunities to try new exciting things that challenged her once more. It's hard to say as i don't know what Kylah's like but it may be that they feel she could benefit from a little bit of time spent with older kids too.

AAANNNNYYYWAY.   In saying all of that, Definately express your concerns and discuss with them to find out exactly what their plans are. A good daycare should be discussing this with you long before it starts happening and keep you fully up to date with plans for your child, how the implementation is going and find out how things are from your end of things... not just putting a note in the cubby.

good luck

OMG Andrew didn't move to the Toddlers side till he was almost 3 (I had a say in that thou), and at the DC the boys are at they move over at 3 as well.

I would tell them you are not ready for her to move yet (she isn't even 18 months yet), but take a pillow in it can help now thou.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

IMO that's too early to start the transition. Our DC does the transitioning over a couple of months, less if need be depending on the child.

The only reason I could see them moving her earlier was if she WAS walking and needed more stimulation etc than what was given in the under 2's - but if you think she should stay where she is you definitely have a right to express those concerns. Do they think that because she's had a hard time adjusting that maybe she needs a few months to transition? That's the only reason I can think of.

Thats way too early IMO Nyah didn't move to the toddler side until she was 3. Definitely question them about that, and tell them straight that you dont want her moved!

I am the manager of an under twos centre,
we would never move a child before we speak to the parents about what would work best for their child.
I work at a large centre that has two different licences so legally we cant move the children until they are two but often we have had children stay with us until they are older if we feel they arent ready. (we would never move a child over who wasnt walking.)
Ask to speak to whoever is in charge and voice your concerns, the centre should be doing what is right for her and have her best interests at heart.
feel free to PM me if you need advice

Maybe it depends on the centre...our toddlers room was for the ones who were walking...they moved over at around 18 months give or take. Some of her friends moved sooner.

Miss M has just moved up to the pre-school 1 room and she is 2 years 3 months.

I was perfectly happy with this but it sounds like your day care has a totally different set up. I would talk to the manager and voice your concerns.

I reckon it is also to early if its got over two's in the class.

James daycare goe infant 0-1 toddler 1-2 preschool 2-31/2ish not sure but ther are a few bigger kids that look like four olds in there most of them a James's ages or a little bit older. then the prep room 31/2 ish till their ready for school.

I wouldn't be happ if they were trying to move James up like they are Kylah aswell I would talk to them and express your concerns about and maybe come to an agreement about when you would feel more confident about her moving up.

As part of Zoe's transition into the over 2s, she slept on a stretcher in the under 2s for a few months before moving into the over twos. She was 18/19mths. May-be your daycare is planning on doing the same thing???? If this is the case, you should have been consulted.

I cant speak from experience..because i last worked in a mixed centre and before that ones with over and under 2's...but i would just do what the others have suggested and talk to the teachers...she is definitely not ready and transistion doesn't need to happen till a few months beforehand..esp n her case...I would just assume they would send her more often to get used to it when she does start to transition..for us it wasnt about whether they were walking more about whether they were ready...and in your case you feel she isnt..and that is the most important thing.. so i would voice my concerns and ask why they think transition i necessary so early...did it say they were starting soon?

Our DC has 4 rooms 0 - 2, 2 - 3, 3 - 4, 4 +
My boy was moved from babies at about 16months, in the babies room it was all nurture and he was more than ready to move. He made the transition within a week as he was more than ready. He is still in the room a year on and not looking at moving up yet.

Each child is different and each centre is different. I would hope you can build a relationship with the centre to be able to voice your concerns and be happy with the decision made for your daughter.

Well i talked to them today, and it was a mistake pheeeew!

The note should have read toddles bed, not toddlers room. Because shes so tall she is to big for their cots and is moving to a toddler stretcher..
