Topic: Another Holiday Thread....Palmy vs. Welly Posted: 15 August 2008 at 10:29am |
Ok so I have decided I need a break and to get out of my teeny tiny house. DH has next week off and I was think of going away for a few nights as a family. I dont want to travel far - 1 hour tops. So that kind of only leaves Palmerston North or Wellington, or even maybe the Hutt.
I like Wellington because theres lots to do but I HATE driving in there. I have only ever stayed there with just DH so dont really know any family friendly places to stay. Is there anything else to do there in cold weather, other than TePapa?
Palmerston North - we went there a few years back and stayed in a really nice place which was great for the family. I dont know what there is to do there, there's the esplanade and thats about all I know.
Anyone have any suggestions of where to stay and what to do? Dont really want to be spending too much $$ either
TIA

Palmy has Te Manawa which Keira can do some hands on science stuff (Andrew loves it there).

Not sure if its still open Owlcatraz in Shannon is interesting, with their owls, and big cows. We've been there when it was wet with my friend and her daughter when she was 4 and she enjoyed it.

There's the wildlife park Staglands in Upper Hutt can't remember the name sorry, they give you bags of feed for the birds.
Or Karori Wild Life Sancturay park is fasinating too, the good thing about native NZ animals is they don't mind the rain so you get to see plenty of them.

I thought they were trying to sell it but ended up loosing it in the storm - could be wrong though.
I have been to staglands but am terrified of the road there, was a really nice place.
I think we are looking at going to Palmy - the museum idea sounds nice, I vaguely remember going somewhere like that as a kid with my grandparents (it its even been around that long

There are loads of parks in Palmy and the Lido pool is lots of fun. Te Manawa is great always something different.
A visit to the SPCA and a fluffy cuddle.
Most of the stuff worth doing here is outside.
Depending on what way you come there is there's Steam Engine Museum at Tokomaru.

Oh thanks, these are some great ideas, now I have to convince DH we need a holiday. I'm pretty sure my great uncle owns the steam engine museum so that could be worth a look. Lollipops could be fun too. Just trying to find accommodation now.

For accom talk to Emma (maya) when her and Kellz came down they started at @thehub and it was quite cheap, and it town itself and very safe as the only way you can get into the actually rooms part is by security keys.

Hmmmm, well I live in Palmy and I really do enjoy it here... but I have to admit I'd much prefer to visit Wellers for a holiday any time! Both places have rotten weather so that won't help your decision-making! Good luck, and enjoy your holiday - great idea.

Bets of luck with your planning!

We often go into Wellington for day trips, so we have decided to do something slightly different this time.
We are all booked for Palmerston North, Thursday and Friday - Yay! Cant wait to get out of the house Thinking of possibly going to lollipos Friday lunchtime if any palmy ladies want to casually bump into us there

Well we will come and see you at Lollipops then on Friday. We are leaving here Thursday morning (so long as the roads are ok), and staying till Sunday.
