My mate kept her daughter in her cot til 2 1/2 ish, they got her a big bed because a new baby was coming along so they needed the cot. Other than that I would personally have no idea... so good to know what others have done..

Ashlyn was about 16- 17mths, just after we moved into our new home and we were expecting Anastasia round 19mths so wanted to get her used to bed and move the cot out gradually so we didnt have everything going on at once. Wasn't sooo much of a rush as we have an old style cradle which baby could stay in for much longer than a bassinet. We just had the bed made up in her room with the cot and one night she decided that she wanted to sleep in the big bed and we just went from there. Only had 2 falling out of bed episods .... 1 very recently lmao thinking about it, MIL had bought satin type pj's, lol you can imagine the rest!!! Thud, scream!, mum & dad rofloao!!! sorry so long

When we were little we got our "big beds" when we were 18 months because we were lil sh*ts and started trying to learn how to climb out of the cot and mum was worried we would land on our heads

I think about 18 months for me. The lady whose cot I had borrowed wanted it back and I got a bit excited and jumped at the opportunity to put her in a "big girl's" bed. In hindsight, should have considered the fact that the little toad can open her door because as soon as she discovered that (coupled with my laziness) it has been a mission to get her to stay in bed.

Hannah was the same as Ashlyn (see KezPlanet), although she actually was a bit unsure of the big bed thing. It was fun during the day but she wanted her security of being in the cot (familiar) at sleep times.

Briona just wanted to be in a big bed, she used to play in Hannah's one during the day. But I was getting worried that she would figure out how to climb out of her cot at 15mos so made a quick move. At bedtime the first night she just climbed straight into the new bed!

I think most ppl just do it when the next baby is coming along

We moved Andrew into his big bed at 18 odd months. We started with taking one side of the cot off so he knew that one side was open and then went into the bed a month after that. We did have help with the transition as at his daycare he was too long for the cot so had to move to a stretcher (very low to the ground) at about 15 months.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Paris moved into a big bed full time at 11 months, and wa having day sleep sin it from about 10 months i think. It was our old double bed cos we got a new one, and she had never learnt to roll so we knew she probably wouldn't go anywhere. We just short sheeted the bed, and made sure that the duvet on it was a very light summer-weight one. It was about then she got a pillow too, a very flat one which i stuck underneath her bottom sheet so that she wouldn't get stuck underneath or suffocate. we stuck her old cot matress on the floor beside it too. She had a safety sleep too so i made up another long piece of fabric with velcro and attached it so it could fit the double bed mattress.

I dunno how she would cope if we changed her bed to a single now though she's used to having a huge bed all to herself.

Ayja, has no room for a normal bed, otherwise i would have moved her into one before she could get out as well.. settle her in and get her used to the bed.. before she can get out.. otherwise that's two things to tackle at once - getting used to the new bed as well as now having the freedom to finally get out.
She has an american convertible cot.. and i have seriously debated taking the front off it, but know she would get out, or fall out cos she is an active sleeper.. (ie we usually find her looking like she fell asleep on her hands and knees, with her bum up in the air, or lying across the cot with legs out between the rails.) I asked her if she wanted mummy to make her bed a big girls bed and take the rails away and she got really angry with me and said NO!

jack moved into his big boy bed on his 2nd birthday. mostly as charli was due 2mths later and we wanted to get jack used to the bed before she arrived.
as it turned out, he has never got out of bed and settled in it straight away

I put Mercedes in her bed at 18months. She settled into the bed well as she wanted to sleep in a big bed like her big sister.

18 months for Jake. he was really good and until we moved him in with Taine, he never got out of ebd - he does however, like to have a few books to peruse while he naps. Now, he's forever climbing out and into the cot with Taine and driving me nuts.

for taine we will probably leave it to 18 months again. we aren't in any rush at all.

Just reading Mum2Paris's post, when do you start to give them pillows?

We are also considering putting Charlotte into a double bed rather than a single. And maybe soon too reading through other peoples experiences, she sleeps so well in our bed and I think she would appreciate one of her own.

Charlotte had just turned 2. I think it was pretty much the perfect time for her- she was really good about staying in it and thought it was a real treat getting her 'big girl' bed

This is interesting to read thanks ladies for contributing. The reason i asked is coz i have a friend whos boy discovered how to climb out of his cot and would always fall to the floor with a huge bang. She said she put him in a bed at 10 months coz its less for him to fall from the bed than the top of a cot. Makes sense really Ill just have to see how ella goes She sleeps anywhere so i dont have probs with that its just when the time is right i guess

I gave the girls thin pillows after they started crawling out and lying on top of the duvet - figure they're doing it anyway! That was around the 10m mark.
