Topic: Bub prefers one breast over the other? Posted: 01 May 2007 at 5:15pm |
Has anyone else had this with their breastfeeding baby?
Benjy really prefers my right boob, and will only feed for a short time off the left. It doesn't seem to make a difference how full or empty it is, and changing positions or offering it first have had no effect.
Am I doomed to be lopsided till I wean him?

Yeah Alyssa used to be like that cause my left side was super fast flow and the right was normal. Now that she's older she can handle it fine but back then she would cry every time she knew she was going onto the left side.

Babies can also prefer one side over the other if their neck is out or they have an ear infection. It's a good idea to offer the least preferred side first (ie when they are really hungry). La leache are a good source of info to help curb the habit cause you don't wanna get mastitis or lopsided.

I had a lot of probs with that when Han was a bit younger than Benjy. I think she disliked the right side as I felt quite awkward and wasnt as relaxed. I went to the GP for something else and she said she ended up feeding a couple of her kids off one side only for months - gave up on the other side.
Can you think of any reason? Try a different position? But I agree with Teresa to offer the left first every time so he is taking some from there. Good luck.

I don't know whether it was Maya's preference or mine but I always seemed to find feeding on the right side easier. I didn't feed the gremlins enough for them to get a preference, altho Sienna would fight the bottle to get a booby.

Josh prefers to lay on his right so loves feeding off the left side and I hold him in the rugby hold on the right side.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Gee sounds like our two little Munchkins are the same at everything!
LOL
Blake has preferred by left side for ages - first thought I was nuts but he wriggles and squirms and grizzles on the right..swap him over and he is right as rain! Weird.

Alize prefers to feed off the left as he prefers to snuggle his head on his right side. When I put him to bed on his back he always favours his right side too, so now Im in the process of encouranging him to turn and snuggly on his left side as he may develop a lopsided head
