Topic: Kids - Sore Tummys Posted: 30 July 2009 at 5:34pm |
My daughter is nearly 3. Lately she tells me she doesn't want to eat as eating makes her tummy sore. It certainly does appear to be the case. She's been allergy tested (doctors test and naturopath hair intolerance test) and nothing showed. DH's family have a variety of intolerances including lactose, gluten, salicylate and nitrate.
I've tried cutting each of those out for a good 6 weeks or so in the past (one at a time) and didn't see any clear improvement - sometimes she eats ok, sometimes she doesn't.
Any one been here an know how I should proceed? Do I just wait until she is old enough to work out what upsets her tummy? If I cut something out, what should it be?
At present she is lso losing weight, has dark circles around her eyes all the time, is not her active self at all and has battles with constipation. She used to be SUCH an active kid but now she spends much of her time sitting as she has no energy.
In the last 2 days she's done 2 poos so isn't currently constipated but she has been clearly been having gripes today and is refusing to eat. She just wants to sit and watch tv and on and off she cries and holds her tummy.

Has she been seen by a paediatrician at all? I wouldnt wait too long if she is losing weight and is not her usual self...
Janaya had constant sore tummies when she was little, she was severely constipated though.

Sorry, I'd be off to the docs ASAP. If there's nothing medical, then a good dietician may be able to advise if you/GP think intolerance might be an issue - I think Anna Richards is an intolerance person.

have you had her iron levels checked? Someone (Lizzle, I think?) found out that her son's iron was low and causing him to be very tired and run down. My mum is anemic and at times it makes her very rundown and tired.
If your daughter is not a big/keen eater and is not happy to eat some foods she may be lacking in something as well as being sensitive to other things.

Yeap. Doctor hasn't been much help. She has good and bad patches with her eating but everyone has noticed the decrease in her energy. Bloods were all fine. Goodness only knows how her iron has remained ok but it is.

Could do. If it is an intolerance it is unlikely a doc will pinpoint it though.
Argh, it's just frustrating. I've been casual about it as there is no point in stressing but it is bothering me ATM. I feel sorry for her but also know toddlers can be deliberately fussy. It is hard to distinguish at times

Interesting that the natruopath didn't pick up anything, they usually pick up lots of intolerances. I think you should ask for a referral to a peadiatrician if it continues, just because you know your child best and if something isn't sitting right then there probably isn't something right. Also she might be lacking in something so you could think about putting her on a supplement, if she isn't eating much. Good luck

When I say nothing...carrots and potatos came up as a slight intolerance as did chocolate (at the very low end of the scale). It was a very short list...and the first time they'd seen a carrot intolerance LOL!
James - we are all good with other things now. Elle is fantastic...it really is just the food issue left now. Goodness only knows how we managed to totally lose all the other issues but they are gone! It is amazing to compare the amazing kid she is now to the mad little thing she used to be (I mean that in the nicest possible way of course!).

irons can plummet rapidly and blood testing at first signs regularly might give you a better indication - i am often anaemic and need of iron top ups and have done since I was little....get some incremin into her for a week and see if that helps....I swear by it and if ella ever drops iron will give it to her in a heartbeat as it helped me all thru my childhood - and tastes awesome!

We are both loving our floradix iron stuff from the supermarket ATM. I find it hard to stick to 10mls twice a day...I crave the stuff! Mind you...I am 39.5 weeks pregnant so pretty much crave everything!
