Topic: Jury service Posted: 21 August 2008 at 9:44pm |
Can anyone tell me the exact process they use to determine this 'random' draw for jury service?!
I swear it is not random, and I swear I'm on their top list of people to call on. I was sent a letter when I was pregnant, again when Ashlee was about 8 or so weeks old, and one again last week! I think I've had at least 3 before I was pregnant too. I've managed to get out of all of them so far. DH laughs because he's been summonsed ONCE. It's just not me, I don't ever want to do it if I can help it.
It drives me crazy. This seriously cannot be random, can it?! Do people who study law get to learn how they do it? I really want to know just how it's generated.
TIA!

From what I know its the electoral roll (and of course some people are exempt due to their work being conflict of interests or too important to leave blah blah blah), but maybe because you've got out of it so many times they keep putting you at the top. After all, it's our 'civic duty' etc etc to do it. I've been called up twice, both time while I was pregnant so haven't been able to do it.

If they keep putting me at the top, then it's not really random, is it? That's my point really. I don't know how it can be random if I'm just unlucky and get called almost every year since I've been on the electoral roll. Maybe it's just pure coincidence, but I'm having a hard time believing that LOL!

My mum used to get called up really often too!
She used to call it her bi-annual summons.

I have been called up 4 times, including on my 21st birthday!!! I was NOT happy!
Yet other people including my DH have NEVER been called up, he laughs when I receive yet "another" jury service letter!
I am not so sure how random it is either

You're lucky, they didnt wanna let me off for that! I sent a letter from my LMC saying that I was 36 weeks preg and got one back stating that I was still required to go - they got a very strongly worded one in reply. Never heard back.

Oh suck!
I know what you mean about how it doesnt feel "random" - I wonder about it too! I have been called up 4 times as well - my Dad is DYING to be called up - but has never been!
I rang after I got my 4th one and said since I wasnt able to do the other ones does that mean I go to the top of the list etc - they swore black and blue that I wasnt and that it didnt work like that.
Tui - yeah right!

Yeah, I seriously considered ringing and asking the same thing when I got this one! My dad used to be called up ALL THE TIME. He managed to get off most of them, but ended up going to one that he wasn't excused from, and then not 2 years later, he got called again! That one, he got out of because you don't have to do it again within 2 years. Seriously though, the electoral roll is HUGE. Why me?!?!?! Hahaha. Hope I've given them a good enough excuse this time.

I've been called 3 times too.
I sat on a jury once (it was a rape case ). The second time I was 5 months pregnant but so big I looked like I would give birth any minute so I worked on my waddle and was challenged almost immediately after my name was called as I gingerly stood up and waddled towards the bench. The 3rd time Michaela was only a few months old so I sent in her birth cert and got out of it.
DH has only been called once.

I have been called about about 5 times since 2003, I think all of them were in the first two of those years. Been very quiet lately so maybe they do back off after a while. (btw I have always been exempted)

I've been called up 5 times and I'm only 23, been on a jury once but have got out of the rest but thankfully I'm exempt for a little while.

I've never been called. I'd love to do jury service (coz I'm so nosy lol!) but I'm not allowed as I work in the media.

I was thinking about it, I don't think I would get called up here as the closest High Court is Palmy and they would have to put us up in a Motel for the entire time. And the closest district court is Wanganui and that would be the same as well as it is a 3 hour round trip (if you take the back roads). I want to stay here for a long as I can .

LOL! I got excused!
And... "I advise that you are excused from further service until 15 September 2009." Just watch though, as soon as September '09 rocks around, I'm bound to be called again!
