hi
my baby is a happy, healthy six month old girl. She has breast feed perfectly since birth. I tried starting her on solids 3 weeks ago. She will eat dry food such as crackers really well but wil not eat anything wet- and especailly hates the spoon. She does seem to like the taste as if I do manage to slip some in she eats it without a fuss but she is very 'anti' the spoon and has now started to cry if I put her in the highchair. She is still breast feeding really well but is waking in the night- this hasn't happened for months. She has taken on enough food to have changed her motions but this week we have taken a big step back ad she is just crying when I try to feed her and she bites her lips shut.
I have also just found out I am seven weeks pregnant so I REALLY need to be sleeping well at night and also need her to take solids !
If anyone has any ideas about how to encourage her to eat or has a similar story PLEASE let me know!
I have tried putting the food onto the crackers etc but she won't eat them if they feel wet!

Sometimes babies can be a bit fussy when things feel/taste different and you might just need to reintroduce every few days. Maybe put her on your lap to feed her instead of in the highchair, for a little while. The waking at night thing can easily be because of the extra hunger - particularly at her age.

maybe its the sort of spoon you are using. is it metal or plastic?... you could try giving her a spoon to play with to get used to it. the night waking could be due to the introduction of solids - making her thirsty perhaps or playing havoc with her digestive system.

I agree with GandT, I'd give her a spoon to play with during the day so she doesn't always associate with something she may not like.
What kind of food are you giving her and do you warm it up? I know that when I started my girl on solids she wouldn't eat anything unless is was warm. It was a bit of a pain when we were out and about, but it was only a phase

Hope this helps

And congrats on the pregnancy!
My beautiful 2 girls...nearly 4 and 13 months

I will also give her a spoon to play with during the day. Perhaps with a bowl with that as well. Let her explore it and bash it around ect. Also dont put her in the highchair if she is agitated with it. Just put her on your lap or even her pram.

Other thing is when do you give her her solids? Sometimes it is better to give it at another time. Seeing that you say she is waking up again. That might be due to teeth. It can be because she is getting more thirsty due to solids or it might be that she is starting to need more.

I can tell you what we did and then you can perhaps see if it will work for you. Start with only one meal. If she is really hungry in the morning let her breastfeed and then about an hour later make her some porridge or some nice fruit or veggies. Let her have a spoon or two. REally when they start out it is like a minute amount. Only about a spoon or two full. Do that for about 3 or 4 days. If that goes well then try another spoonfull. If she doesnt want more then it is fine.

2 weeks later you can bring another meal in. Say lunchtime. Make some veggies ect and do the same. Only a few spoonfulls. I posted a thread in the toddler one about what kids should be eating at what ages if you do a search you will see that it is really a small amount. Their tummy's are tiny.

I introduced the supper time meal last as it sometimes is too heavy for babies to deal with. Remember their whole digestive system will have to get use to all of this. I also introduced water to McKayla in a sippy cup at this age with meals. So she can get use to other fluids as well. (I boiled the water and let it cool down)

Hope it helps you.

Bit messy but perhaps let her play with food, this is what was suggested to my sister when her DS was refusing solids. Allowed him to just taste some from his fingers without a fight about it, he soon got a taste for different flavours.
