Topic: food memories Posted: 01 May 2008 at 8:10pm |
Have been reading this great recipe book. bascially this woman wrote down all her family recipes and the stories behind them. she talked about how her childhood memories revolve around food.
so what food will you remember from your family?
Mine is mum's roasting dish chocolate ckae - really neat aero like texture, and her honey chicken. Nana's is a strawberyy jelly like pudding she ONLY makes during xmas and of course Nana's pav - everytime I make it, turns out flat as. dad's will be his pizza - which he prides himself more, and costs about four times as much as a PIzza Hut pizza.
Lewis' is his uncle Puke (pronounced pu-keh) - banana jelly stuff - pretty foul if you ask me, his mum's raw fish (marinated with coconut cream), chop suey and his aunties mayonnaise (raro potato salad). everytime we have a family get-together, thats what they make. Oh and his mum make a mean chocolate tortre- that I once mentioned i liked and I got a THREE HOUR lesson in how to make it - while my sister in laws giggled in the background.

My food memories as a kid are kinda bad and a bit from the normal I think.
All I remember of food up to the age of like 5 is being sat at the table miserable as all hell as I was bribed to try and eat meat and what I thought was horrible veges..
So I don't really remember the food as a good thing

My dad's soup - any flavour but my favourite was pumpkin. We used to have it every sunday during the cold months (I grew up in dunedin so that was pretty much all year round ) and we'd buy a loaf of unsliced bread (which we called Sunday bread) and cut it really thick before toasting it.
My mum's fridge biscuits. A really simple biscuit recipe which, once made, is rolled and put in the fridge then you cut off as much as you want to bake - I still make them now.

We have a recipe book that my aunties put together from my nana's recipes after she passed away and I remember a lot of them from visiting when I was a kid - her ricebubble cakes, hokey pokey biscuits, oh and a jam she used to make that I swear tasted like strawberry jam but in fact had only a few strawberries in it and was mostly tomatoes, odd huh?!
Food memories of my mums would have to be her lasagna, it's legendary, her toad in the hole and her Xmas dinners - she makes everything from scratch, including the Xmas pud.

Nana's chocolate fudge - I have the recipe but it doesn't taste the same when I make it.
My worst food memory is mashed carrot and parsnip I will never subject my children to that.
Has anyone passed their food dislikes onto their kids?

I love mashed carrot and parsnip, that's one of my favourite side dishes.
I don't like tinned fish and a couple of weeks ago DH had some in a roll. When he kissed me I could smell it but didn't say anything, then he went to kiss Michaela and she wouldn't let him near her - LOL, so I guess I've passed that onto her.

I *wish* I could pass on my hatred of peas and mashed spud to my kids, but alas they've inherited their fathers tastes and if I haven't cooked them for a while he bugs me until I do

Oh god, this thread is torture on my diet LOL
My food memories are mainly from my mum and nannie (mum's mum) so I guess she passed them onto mum and mum onto me
Golden Syrup Pudding (cooked the same way as a good ole steamed pud)
Vegetable soup cooked from scratch using a pork hock or beef bones
Sunday Roasts (be it lamb or chicken as I'm not a fan of roast beef

Oooh, I forgot Sausage Soup - basically a thick veg stew with pieces of sausage in it. I used to love coming home from school in winter soaking wet from the rain and finding a big pot of it on the stove

I remember sitting on my daddy's knee at what must have been about age 3-ish, stealing his corn on the cob and eating it.. apparently i did that all the time. I remember going into town with mum and having an animal bar if i was good (animal bars are so cool!) I remember having roast chicken. mmmmmmmm. I also remember a few times sitting for ages because i wouldn't eat something on my plate.
I remember mum making home-made easter eggs, and home made chocolates, and helping mum to make the flower bickies with the special biscuit press. I loved baking with her, i loved going to school and seeing the other kids with their packeted lunches and knowing that i had special bickies that i had helped make. I carrying on the home baking with my girls, we make the home made chocs etc, we make the bickies with the flower press that has been handed down to me, and we started the new tradition of choosing the cake they wanted each year. it's special. food memories don't always have to be bad.

SO yes I hated that too! A couple of months ago, Dad did roast parsnip and I thought I'd try it (I used to dislike pumpkin but now I like it, thought that might be the same). But no
My faves - Dad's thick bacon and vege soup (cooked in the crockpot and then put in the blender so it's really thick), eaten with soft cheese rolls from the local bakery. We had it every Sunday in winter, and still do.
Grandma's rice pudding YUM.
My other Grandma's lemon sago, served with vanilla icecream. She called it "hot and cold" and the rule with hot and cold was that you were allowed to eat it straight away cos the icecream melts into the lemon sago! Mum makes this for me when I'm sick - I had loads of it when I had my wisdom teeth out!
Marinated chicken, mmm my favourite.
Now you're making me hungry.... for marinated chicken followed up with rice pudding...

Mums vege soup, seafood salad, macaroni cheese, lasagne, roast anything, plum pudding, pavlovas, OMG I could carry on forever. She is such a great cook but has failed to pass that talent on to any of her daughters
My nana's betty boops and toast slices.
My dads raisin cookies.
My sisters apricot and walnut loaf.

Mum used to make this mince thing with a thick layer of what she called mexican corn bread on top. It was kind of like a pie I guess. YUMMO!

I;m going to start collecting recipes I think. It's a shame to think all these awesome foods are going to die out with the older generations.
