I think someone has posted something like this before, but I cant find it in the search function.

What do you do with your photos? Do you burn them to disc and store them, then delete them? I know I need to do this as I have run out of room on my computer. I am just so terrified of losing my cds, and I love the convinience of being able to browse through my pictures.

I thought about putting them on an online gallery, so I uploaded some to Flickr.com. The first few that I did sent me over my "monthly limit". I have so so many, Im guessing if I did decide to upload them all I would surely go over my usage allowance for broadband?! I have 1000s of photos.

Also, does anyone know how many MB a pic should be for printing?I thought if I did downsize my photos (they are about 10MB each ) I could have them online and print from there if need be, but worry about losing all the quality?

We're planning on getting an external hard drive just for photos. It's safer than CDs, I've heard, and they're pretty affordable these days.

While i am all for dgital photos etc. I really do think that you are best to print off your favs and put them into an album. At this stage noone knows how long photos that are stored will last we do know though that printed photos providing they are kept last a long time look at how many photos of 1800 are around. The best suggestion i can give you is to print some out and to store them i have done this with phots from our trips overseas. a CD was easy for me but a memory stick may work too. I guess what i am trying to say is make sure you have photos stored in multiple methods they are far too precious to lose.

I have an external hardrive for our photos. I do have cd copies as well (I store those at work).

I like the hard drive though as I can always access my pics .. but in an emergency I can just grab that drive.

We have an external hard drive for our pics and when I remember (not at all recently) I also copy them onto CDs and give them to my parents so if anything happened to the hard drive we still have photos.

Prior to getting a hard drive we'd write a cd for us and one for my parents, this came in very handy when I managed to wipe a cd which included a video of Michaela crawling forwards for the first time and photos of her first Christmas.

I also have a lot of my favs on facebook so if by a freak twist of fate something happens to our hard drive and mums cds then we still have the best saved online.

I am struggling with this too, I think I have a problem and cant stop taking photos I am very quickly taking over 2 computers.

I have been meaning to get some disks and print a whole lot off. I have a USB stick (is that the same sort of thing as an external hard drive?) But I'm scared of loosing it and In my mind it just doesn't seem safe enough.

I have my favourites on facebook so if wort come to worst....

Don't forget, if you're using an external hard drive you can't have it permanently plugged into your computer if you want everything to be "safe." If your computer catches something, so will the hard drive. My friend's business partner just found that out the hard way, she lost ALL their photos (and all their work stuff - lucky my friend also backs up everything at the end of the day!).

Having said that, we have all our photos up to 2007 on a separate external hard drive but everythng after that is on this laptop. Really need to get onto moving stuff off, but like kaiz, I like to be able to browse through old pics whenever I like! I've got "favourites" on facebook and picasa though so I could look through those I guess.....

I also have an external hard drive. I also have the important ones on CD so I always have a backup so if I lose the CD I have the HD and if the HD dies I have the CD.

Daizy a USB stick is similar to an Exernal HD but the HD has bigger capacity.

External hard drive here too when I remember. But if we had to leave the house in a rush I'd have a baby under one arm and my iMac under the other provided of course DH was there to carry the other baby, lol!

Facebook and youtube are my friends. I regularly send emails to family with photos and clips and they tend to be the favourite ones.

USB flash drives aren't all that stable apparently.

I back up all my stuff to a DVD but have also started putting pics on CD's.

I am then going to put them all in a safe box that if need be we can just grab.

Nowdays pictures are so big they chew up space! Pretty scary that I have 8 years of digital pictures on my computer! As you can imagine space is becoming rather limited!

I SO need to get onto this too, I lost ALL my photos from our computer a few years ago because it was stolen - I was absolutly guttered.

I back up my photos now onto CD - but I feel I want more than that now too.

An external hard drive would be the best bet.

But always keep them backed up on CD, you never know what can happen. I just have an area in a cupboard for all photo albums and that is where I keep the back up CDs.

I would say external hard drive also.

I store photos on snapfish.co.nz and order prints/gifts off the site also. Only thing I find annoying is you can upload at full size but can't download at full size, for free anyway (I think they charge 25c per pic)

That's kinda like asking how much is a computer ... lol.

It all depends on what you want .... the biggest determiner of price is the size you want. You can check out websites like Dick Smith or Noel Leeming to get an idea of prices. Or you could also have a look at Pricespy.

You could also buy just a hard drive ($110 the other day for a 500gb harddrive) and buy an external enclosure for it.. pretty cheap on trademe.. :)

Then when it gets full, put it somewhere safe, buy a new drive and put it in the enclosure.. that's what we do here..

Hard drives themselves are soo cheap its ridiculous these days.

A solid external drive in a case is anywhere from $150 - $300 depending on size too..
