Hi, I am planning on taking a year off full time work when PEanut comes around but will need to use daycare some times eg if I want to work 1 or 2 days a week (I get paid well so a day or 2 would make a huge difference to our ability to pay our mortgage etc). Also we have no family here in Chch and there might be the odd day we need someone to look after bubs.

What are the options?

How much is daycare?

How do you get your child into daycare?

What are waiting lists like?

What should I look for?

Does anyone recommend or not recommend one in CHCH?

Thanks
Nikki

for a start what side of town do you live and what area do you work in? I can recommend a few over my side of town but wouldnt know much about the south side.

The popular daycares like ABC etc... are about $25 for half day and $38 for a full day (approx but around that amount)

Waiting lists are pretty bad! Its taken me a few months to get an extra half day for Kobe and some preschools arent taking any new kids at all.

Yep, I'm on the south side Beckenham. Do you have to put your child on the waiting list before it is born?

There are a couple ofg threads about daycares. Have a search in the first baby one as well as the general one to find them.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

my sil lives that way, I can ask her where she recommends. she was also a child care teacher so kind of knows the good ones out that side.
some places wont hold spots for children but depends on where you chose to go.

The other thing is too, do you work in the city?  I have heard that PAL is really good from a few people, but that is off Sheffield Cres.    Good luck, you might get to clucky and not want a bar of work!!!! (lol)

What are the options?
Childcare centre/nanny/home based care

How much is daycare?
Not sure about in Chch but up here at my centre (in hastings) it's $135 per week or $80 for 20 hours or $37.50 for one day.
Income thresholds for subsidies have just gone up quite a bit too.

How do you get your child into daycare?
Ring them up and make a time to go in and see them. These days some have websites so you could have a look before you go in, or you could request some information to be sent out to have a look at before you go in.

What are waiting lists like?
Again, don't know about chch.

What should I look for?
Number of qualified teachers, ratio of staff:children, number of children in total, do they have separate under/over two's areas, do they provide lunch, have a look around at the playground, toys, sleeping facilities and make sure they all look good. I usually prefer small non-profit centres to big corps like ABC as they put the money back into the centre rather than trying to make profit, and in my opinion it's much nicer having a smaller number of teachers/other parents to get to know.

Have a look at their ERO report (there is a page or two which is a bit of a summary which is easier than reading the whole thing!) You can see them on the ERO website.

Have you thought of home based care? My friend has her son in it full time and she loves it. Her son gets taken to playcentre and other things like supermarket etc... this is also cheaper than daycare.
My beautiful 2 girls...nearly 4 and 13 months

NZpiper, my partner and I will be moving back up to ChCh at the end of this year, so if you need anyone to care for bubs for a day or two a week, then Im more than happy to help.

I was a nanny for 5yrs, so Ive got a bit of knowledge under my belt. And im sure its cheaper than daycare, still, at the end of the day, when you are checking different day cares the above advice is great,

And the best daycare I could reccomend (my miece and nephew go there and I was really impressed with their set up) was a few buildings down from Hagley college, Im having a memory blank about the name and the street name, Hagley Ave I think. My sister liked that it was in the centre of town so she could be there super quick if one of them was ill etc. Having said this they probably have a considerable waiting list so may not be feasable for you.

All food for thought. Best of luck.
