Topic: for those that have more than 1 dog Posted: 08 August 2008 at 4:07pm |
DH has just bought home a puppy
We already have an 9 month old pup who is more like a dog as he is HUGE!
So for those with more than 1 dog - do your dogs share a house/kennel?? do they get on ok??
this pup is 9 weeks old and DH has called him Munter! he is the same breed as Diago (big dog).
Munter has already given Diago a hiding even though he is only the size of 1 of Diagos legs! hence why im worried about how they will get along

oooooooh what breed have you got?
oscar (our new baby) is almost 5mths old and he dominates our older boy clyde, who is almost 6!
when you say munter gave diago a hiding, was it serious or just in play? i'm sure once they work out who is boss, they will be fine. we've had oscar for just over a month and he is now best mates with clyde.
at first i was a little apprehensive about oscar's nature because he was trying to boss clyde around and also snapped at the kids a couple of times.....but all it took was for DH to 'down' him after a nip at jack and he's been really tolerant ever since.
i'm sure if diago didn't like being bossed around, he'd let munter know who was boss?
good luck with your new baby

they are dogo argentinos.
Diago is the biggest sook ever! if you sit on the ground he will try and curl up in your lap even though he HUGE! lol
Diago was trying to play with Munter and munter did the whole nutty barking thing and nipping at Diagos feet
I wasnt sure i was ready for a new dog because Diago is such a handful!

We've got 2 dogs and once they worked out who was boss they were fine. Good mates now and play heaps together, it's nice they have each other for company if we're away for a few hours from the house. They share a bed.

I guess the only thing you can do is give it a trial period, if you find that things arent working, then maybe you could find a suitable home for Munter (even if it seems mean, disrupting the household with another pup can mean chaos).
But then again, Munter and Diago could end up having a beautiful friendship once Munter learns his place.
Good luck!!!!

We have two dogs, Leela was about 7 months old when we got Santo, she was a rehome so was about 2.5yrs already. Leela was full grown but still very puppyish.
If they are fighting then I would keep them seperate at home (if poss) and take them out to first socialise them. When we got Santo we did the meet and greet on neutral territory, that went well so then we brought Santo home for a play date (more to see if she would try to eat the cats). Santo is now in charge after some small fights between them and Leela is now happy with that and will just follow.
I think just give it a couple of weeks, they will normally just settle themselves down and all you need to do is break up anything that you think is bad. Mine have only ever had one real fight over a bone about a week after we got Santo and I just went and took it off them, cos I'm in charge so it's my bone. If they do keep fighting then perhaps find a dog trainer in your area and take the new pup to puppy school so he can learn some manners, its normally not that expensive to do and is well worth it.
Mine now sleep in the same kennel at night, they go in the same crate in the car and although they have a bed each in the house they are quite often curled up together and when outside where one goes the other normally follows. I think its worth perserving with cos then they have a mate when your not their to be company, they are pack animals and love to be with people or other dogs.

well DH took them out together and things went good and now they are sharing a kennel.
Diago has established that he is 'big' therefore the boss and im actually feeling really sorry for this poor tiny little pintsize puppy especially because diago is....*ahem*...trying to um....ya know....
DO dogs not realise about gender!? they are both males!

oscar was trying to *bump uglies* with clyde a couple of days after we brought him home....he was only 3.5mths old!!
now they both try it on with each other so it's a mutal agreement

our two are mum and pup i bred yet they still fight from time to time...the pup (now aged 6!) hold her mother down by scruff of neck!
I used to make sure i still took the mum out a lot on her own...and taught them to play differently...eg one with frisbee and one with ball more.
two males will be hard tho as the fighting insticnt will be there ....bad enough when one of mine comes on heat...they damn near kill one another! and they are nice friendly collies....
my one big recommendation is to go to dog training and make sure they are at least base level obedience trained....it also helps you guys ensure you are the bosses of them and not vice versa....and bailey could take part in that so they see him as a boss too!

Dogs hump or try to hump as asserting power, my female dog does it to my other female dog. I stop her though as I don't want her getting to big for her boots. She tried doing it to my dog trainers dog and got well and trully put in her place.....hehehe

I have 3 dogs.
When I first got together with the other half, he already had one, and my dad dumped my mums dogs on me after she left him. Fran (Matts dog) wasnt quite sure what the bloody hell was going on as it had just been her for quite a while, but my 2 doggies were fine with her. Fran is a Bichon Frise, and my old boy is too, but I also had a pomerainian - not just a standard one, a teacup one. So fran thought Tammy was a puppy even tho she was 15. We had problems with dominance, which took a good couple of months to go, but after that they'd sleep in the same bed together.
Now in chch, I have Max and Fran, Tammy lives with my sister in auckland cuz she's 16 now and too old to travel, but we have mums new dog (mum lives with me) who is a young girl who is a breeder. Theres a LOT of problems which are gradually getting sorted out, heaps of humping and scraps, but usually they're just fine.
My advice to you is to just give it a go. Give your original doggy lots of loves and get him/her to sit with you and cuddle while you're patting the pup, then your original dog will see that it's not being left out. Any dog can get used to new ones on the scene, it just takes a little while to sort out.
I have had 6 dogs all at once in the past of varying ages, all arriving at different stages, but they've all got on great! I used to foster abused dogs as well, and my dogs were the greatest in the whole world!!! Good luck!

we have two dogs and have a double kennel for them, when its really cold they sleep in the same side to keep warm.
Lucky is a broader collie and zac is a great dane, they didnt get along to well to start with, but now they are like best mates.

We have two purebred labradors mum and baby Chloe is 7 and Comet is 4 they have a kennel each but not sure they sleep together or not as the kennels face each other to keep them dry. Comet is the dominant one as bosses his mum around but they are best of friends.
