For a while now Elle hasn't been feeding very well on the breast, she will be quite happy for the first 5 mins or so and then she will start to arch her back and cry out before returning to the boob only to do this again, she is obviously still hungry but is finding it really hard to feed off the breast. I have discussed the issue with the plunket nurse and she has said she thinks its reflux. Now normally I would have had her at the docs to find out about what I can do about it, but I don't like my doc much and am in the process of looking for another one (she doesn't seem the best with babies at all) and also we have a paediatrician appointment anyway on thursday, so have been hanging out for that.

While she won't breastfeed very well, she will take a bottle (EBM), and I am wondering if its just the angle (I tend to sit her up as much as possible when I am giving it to her), but even then after she finishes her bottle she is a bit upset (arches back and cries a wee bit), I have been giving her her dummy (as I have heard this can help) straight after a feed.

So my question is......what can I do to help her - until Thursdays appointment, does this sound like reflux to you???? I hate the fact that she won't breastfeed well and its starting to upset me a bit, but will continue with the EBM so that she is happier.

go to the pharmacy and get some satchets of gaviscon, and mix it into a paste and give it to her. if it is just a mild case it might help her. then you can go to the doc and get it on script (which is MUCH cheaper!)

hope you find a solution to it. if it helps jordis grew out of it when i started her on solids, but the gaviscon helped lots.

Yep the suckling then arching does sound a lot like reflux. If she is not very spilly, then it could be silent reflux (that's what my DD2 had). The key thing is to not over-fill her tummy. Have you got her cot head elevated 30deg?

Oh no.... I hate reflux. I don't have any advice (busymum knows more than me) but you have my sympathy.

Thanks everyone - I have raised her cot up (it was raised but now have raised alittle more), went and got some infant Gaviscon and have been mixing that into her bottles. Still giving her the EBM as she is taking it alot better than the breast and its kinder on me as well - even though I hate expressing, its better than the on/off again and again!

BS - I haven't really been eating any different (other than a splurge on choc the other night, which I have tried to stay away from because it does seem to affect her, but this has been going on for a wee while now - just seemed to get worse in the last week - 2weeks), have been drinking a wee bit more milk.......and now I am off to see if I have any oatmeal left - might have to get some at next shopping trip.
