Topic: first aid kits Posted: 19 September 2006 at 6:56am |
Have recently decided with two boys on the loose I really need a better first aid kit that wiggles bandaids and Pamol. Any suggestions? Taine OPENED THE DOOR and was crawling down three concrete steps yesterday!!! By opened the door, it wasn't latched properly and he just opened with his hand. Not impressed. And Jake climbed out a window a few days ago - opened it himself and climbed out. it's in his bedroom so may have to get some window locks or he'll be at the neighbours when I put him to bed!

An ice pack in the freezer sounds like a good idea for the inevitable bumps and bruises. MAybe some kind of antiseptic wash stuff so when they fall over and get dirt all through the graze you can wash it out. You could get one thats already made up, but they are probably full of stuff you dont need. Arnica cream is good for bruises too. Maybe also some of the bigger plasters...

yep i agree with aimee, I also have some Paraderm Plus (antiseptic, anaesthetic and an anti-inflamatory) its for cuts bites sting itches sunburn and minor burns.
I also have comfrey ointment (kiwi herb) its like arnica and good for the healing of sprains and strains
Calendula ointment (kiwi herb) aids in healing of the skin
Also if youve got any aloevera in the garden a peice of that in the fridge in summer is a godsend for burns.

A good idea for an icepack is to freeze a wheat bag, or get one of those small wheat bag toys things like a little frog or something, to freeze and use as a ice pack,...softer and they mold to the shape of knees etc better that a hard flat ice pack!

Now this is a good thread, because I too need to make up a first aid kit. Alex pulled our cd rack down on top of himself on Friday, and then fell head first out of his play house..... it has begun!!!!!

I'd probably be inclined to get one from St Johns and I've seen good ones at payless plastics that have all the bandages, sterile stuff etc that you need in a basic kit. Add to that an ice pack and you would be about set!
I was pretty lucky we were given a proper one but I still need an ice pack to add to it!

i was in girl guides, you would think I would know all this. a girlfriend has just recommeded an excellent cream that her friend sells through the gypsey fair. apparently this stuff is brilliant, so will get some and try it. if it works, will let you all know. My boys have chronic bum rash that Nothing seems to clear up completely

My Dad rants on about this stuff called Skineze... which apparently cures everything. It worked well at first... but it's now been melted a few times and I don't know if I'm imagining it, but it just isn't the same anymore!
So... don't melt your stuff Liz.

I bought a basic Pams one from good old Pak n Save and then built on it. We also have in it Micreme for thrush (Maya got it all the time on her bottom), Stopitch cream which is great for mozzy bites etc. and the Paraderm Plus that Maria mentioned.
We use those squeezy tube ice blocks as ice packs - then Maya gets to eat them afterwards, and 9 times out of 10 they don't actually NEED the ice pack, it just maked them feel better to THINK they do. For nastier bumps I'd probably just used frozen veges
Oh and I can't say enough good things about the wheat pack that Miss Maya stole from Target when she was about 15 mths old (long story - she put it in the pram and I didn't realise). It's been great for period pain, when I did my shoulder, when my back plays up, and even when Maya strained her neck a few weeks ago.

That was nice of her to shoplift at such a young age
I went right through Guides and even got my Queens Guide and we still don't have a proper first aid kit. We have all the things for a kit, but they are all over the place. I should put them altogether in one container - but that would take time and effort and I don't have the effort part at the moment.
