Ok this is me doing some forward thinking as I've been thinking lots about this recently

Next Easter we fly to Ireland for 2 months. DH is flying there with us but will be returning long before I do with the girls.
On the outward flight the girls will be 26months.

What I'm interested in is peoples experiences with taking car seats on long haul flights?

Was it a good idea?
Did the kid sleep better in their car seat?

I'm just trying to weigh up if they'll be worth the hassle. Especially as I'll have to lug 2 carseats and 2 toddlers between flights on my own!

We won't be taking them if we don't use them on the flights as we can source some from friends / family when we get there.

tishy, which airline are you flying with? Apparently some don't actually let you take them on. I assume it's not an issue for your girls' ages now, but some airlines (ie Singapore) will only let you have rear facing carseats if someone in "your party" sits in front of them - so there's no arguing re not reclining the seat in front IYWIM.

All that aside though, apparently it is definitely worth it - they're already comfortable with their own seats, you can leave them strapped in during take off, landing and turbulence and if you need to go to the loo and presumably they're harder to get out of than the lap belt on the plane seat

This is all info I've read on expat forums here, I'm thinking about getting C his own seat on our flight home so that we can take a car seat BUT ours is a rear facing capsule so doesn't look like it's a goer

Can you borrow or hire a double sit n stroll (do they exist?) so you've got something to wheel the seats/girls round the airport on?

why not get seats with a hire car when there - your kids will be old enough for the hire ones.

OR if you have family there buy two cheapies (kmart or similar or online) and have them ready and waiting for you...well worth the effort - we were about to do that for oz when our car hire company came up with a baby seat for us.

personally i could not think of anything worse than luggind seats ONTO the plane even if they do let you....id push for the bulk head seats and set up fun beds on the floor...naptimes a few times prior could be "fun" ones like that to prepare them maybe....you probably do have seats for them already but it not ask for a row with seats inbetween...not an option if a busy flight tho.

kiwisj, we haven't booked any flights yet but I didn't think it would be a problem as I've used car seats when I've flown internally alone with the girls. Will keep it in mind when we start shopping around.
Not sure which way we'll go as Singapore has always been a fav stop of ours (and Singapore Airlines too) but I'm thinking as little stops as possible now.

How old will C be when you fly? We flew to Ireland last Xmas when the girls were 11 months and managed to get bassinettes for 3 of the flights.

We have a stroller I can take. Will be investing in harness buddies as well so unsure yet what I'll do on the return flight. Thank heavens DH will be there on the outward flight.

Bomshell, the only reason I'd take the car seats is for the flights as I can easily source carseats from family otherwise.
I know the girls will sleep in their carseats , I'm just not sure how they'll manage on the seats.

I am assuming I would get at least the same service I've gotten on domestic flights. I have never had to carry a carseat on the plane myself. Have always has very helpful airline staff at the gate to help carry the carseat and cluck over the girls.

Also we won't get bulkhead seat rows as these seats will be taken up by parents who will be using the bassinetes.

No advice tishy but I do have to say you are so incredibly brave taking both girls so far on your own (for one of the flights anyway) .

The thought of me taking two to visit my parents scares me already - & they only live in the SI!!

I'm sure you will get the same sort of service on the international flights too. I haven't flown SIA with Callum yet but even on Tiger I had one of the guys offer to carry everything off the plane for me, he came as far as immigration and it was such a big help!

I know a lady here (friend of a friend) with twins and she flies home with them to the UK alone. Pretty sure she takes car seats for the flight, I think for comfort more than anything.

Callum will be almost 10 months when I fly with him on my own (!) and then DH is coming over for a couple of weeks and we'll all come back together. Still haven't actually booked yet Really need to get onto that! I think it will come down to cost for us, and hopefully we'd get a basinette for C, apparently that also depends on the ages of other babies (if any) on the flight.

Carseats rock!! but I have only used it internally and it was a battle to get it on even though it is in the rules. Tom didnt wriggle or fuss. But at 26 weeks you would hope they are more cooperative....and might just curl up either side of you on your laps...oh yay!

I'd get your mum to come back to NZ for a visit

What's exactly what I'm worried about. haha!

As for my mum, with 2 weddings and another set of grandchildren on the way ( yes we do breed in litters it would seem) I don't think she's going anywhere anytime soon

The airlines won't let them sleep on the floor, it's a safety hazard.

Tishy - I don't know that I'd bother with carseats, purely coz they'd be a mission to get on and off and in my experience getting a 2-year old to sleep on a plane is next to impossible no matter what you do. But then they would be useful so you can strap the girls in when you need to go to the loo etc. coz that can be tricky - on our last flight, the flight service director had to hold Chiara and chaperone the gremlins so I could go lol.

Tishy, we flew to LA return a few weeks ago when Caleb was 23 months. We didn't take our carseat onboard because we didn't pay for a seat for him (but got one anyway as the flight wasn't full). Caleb curled up in the seat with a bottle after dinner both ways and slept so I'm pleased we didn't lug a carseat onto the plane. I would check with the airline whether you can take a stroller on the plane. Some let you take an umbrella fold up one, others don't. This would be a must if you are taking two toddlers on your own. I would also try to get some assistance from the airline to get you through if you can.
