I am just wondering if those of you that use formula could help me out -
When I was under my MW she said to chuck any leftover formula after it had been sitting out for an hour (from start of feed). How many of you do this? Or how long do you keep it from start of feed?
I generally chuck it after an hour but sometimes Kaleb can take longer than an hour to take his bottle so should I be making a fresh one up?

Yea i chucked it

What you could do to save so much waste is make up a jug(with measurements) of formula leave it in the fridge covered etc & pour out into bottles as you need it. Formula can last for 12-24hrs in fridge(check your tin) That way you can tell how much he can drink over a certain length of time & eventually make up his bottle accordingly not waste so much. It does get really expensive if your throwing away 1/2 a bottle at each feed.
Hope that helps

We make up a smaller bottle if he drinks more than his normal amount but am just wondering about during feed. LIke this morning he had really bad wind and ended up taking 1hour 15mins to complete his feed - I fed him from the same bottle (since it wasn't finished) but am wondering now whether I should have chucked it and made a fresh one half way through? (Normally he takes his bottle in about 45mins)

I think it would be a bit of give and take. I would have done the same thing and i dont think the extra 15 minutes would be a big issue, I know sometimes Ive given the kids bottles that were a little older than an hour but I wouldnt do it all the time and not if its been sitting in the sun (yeah right like we have any sun at the moment) but you know what I mean.

Yep I agree with my2angels. If the bottle has been kept out of the sun and not kept warm, I don't think at one hour it will suddenly become full of bacteria. I think it comes down to common sense really and personnal choice on what you feel comfortable doing (isn't that the answer to all these parenting dilemmas?)
I do chuck all unused formula at the end of a feed, which does seem a waste, but there is bacteria in baby's saliva which can multiply if you keep it. The idea of making it up in a jug at the beginning of the day is good, I make my bottles up as I go along though so I have never tried it. (Again just what I am comfortable with)

When i did my food safety & hygiene C i learnt that food was OK left out of fridge for upto 2hrs - It was after the 2hrs that bacteria etc started to multiply quicker.

As long as bubs isnt the fussy type & needs to have the bottle warmed again.
Yea the warmth I'm experiencing at the moment is non-existent & like i live in a fridge

When the gremlins were small I used to give them half a feed, then change/play etc. then the rest of the feed as a 'top up' and depending on how their tired signs were that was often up to an hour and a half after the start of the feed. I also reheated it before giving it to them as they wouldn't take it at room temp.

I guess it's just about using common sense, or maybe it's a second time Mum thing coz I know I was way more paranoid with Maya, but I was loather to waste their formula and could never guess how much they would take at each feed.

I did chuck it after their 'top up' tho!
