Topic: Too late to introduce safety sleep?? Posted: 10 August 2007 at 1:37pm |
Hi girls,
I have never had to use a safety sleep with Ollie as he has never moved around in his bed and was happy sleeping inside a sleeping bag up until the last couple of weeks. During his day sleeps I often go into to check on him and he has somehow moved his body either sideways at the top of the cot or he somehow gets his head underneath the cot bumper!! During the night he is pretty good as when I put him down he goes to sleep pretty quickly. Do you think it is too late to introduce a safety sleep or is there something else that I could use to help keep him still in bed?? Any advice would be much appreciated.

IMO it's too late to introduce the SS because you'll soon need him to learn to sleep independently anyway. Remove anything in his cot that could cause him to have trouble breathing (for example, the bumper perhaps) and let him on his merry way. I expect he probably isn't bothered by it anyway LOL. Anytime from in 6mos to a year you'll be looking to move him into a bed anyway and he'll need that freedom by then. (although I know a lot of people keep the SS for the bed but that's my opinion)

Yeah I would agree with Busymum. If he is going to sleep fine then I would just leave him to fall asleep where he does (and remove any safety hazards). I use a safety sleep on Ashleigh and now kinda wish I hadn't started as she won't go to sleep during the day without it now and just crawls around her cot then eventually starts crying and winds herself up

I personally love using the safety sleep, and dont see a problem with continuing using it for a long time yet. I also still wrap Isla which makes her feel secure, and is also a sleep cue for her, and I dont feel that that is an issue either. I would say go for it! Maybe try and borrow one off someone to try first.

I started using the safety sleep about then as Han started standing up in her cot and couldn't figure out how to lie back down.
I phased it out when she was around 18 months I think and she slept fine.

why is it a problem he is moving around? gabriella moves all the time and it is only when she wakes up and cant get her legs out of the side of the bed that i go in and move her back. If he is used to sleeping without one I would continue that way. Im all for free sleeping.

I have just taken the SS off Rhyley for the same reason you want to put one on. He would manage to roll in his safety sleep so no point in it. I would just let him do what he is doing - often I find Rhyley at the top of his cot sideways on his belly. I just turn him round and under the blanket when i go to bed.
I wouldn't go and buy one

I think if you're gonna use one it's certainly easier from the very beginning, so trying now may be a waste of time?
Alyssa is a little over a year old now and we only stopped using the SS in the last couple of weeks as she has been entirely happy in it up until now. I guess that was a pretty good run considering a lot of bubs dislike the restriction much earlier on.

Thanks for your advice girls. I have taken the cot bumper out so will see if that makes any difference. He is usually pretty happy when I put him to bed anyways. I guess I just get a little worried sometimes when I do go and check him and he's lying across the bed and I worry that he might be cold - just have to stop stressing about it as long as he is happy.

I have used one from the start but would probably not introduce one at this stage. Ollie keeps rolling in it now and today when I talked to the plunket nurse about it she thinks they get to a stage where it is safer not to use it.
I am kind of wanting to keep using it to avoid the 'stand up in the cot and not be able to sit down stage' but will just see over the next few weeks how we go.
