Topic: New mums questions!! Posted: 28 October 2005 at 9:58am |
Well, things have been going pretty well since we bought Hannah home. Just a few questions tho if you could all remember back to the newborn days...
1. When they wake up for a feed, do you change their naps first, last or in between? The m/w told me to get her up, feed, change nap, top up feed then back to bed. But she always seems to go again when I'm topping her up. Should I change her again??
2. Breastfeeding - do you alternate sides at each feed, or do one then top up with the other side?
3. How do you decide how many clothes to put on them? I know you are meant to feel down their back to check their temperature, but havent worked out how much she should be wearing, mainly during the day! Dont want her to overheat when she is sleeping in the light during the day.
Thanks ladies

hi aimee re the nappy change i think i did before i put the boys back down - cnat quite remember. and to be honest i cant remember what i used to do for brestfeeding!! shocking aye
as for the clothing thing the plunket nurse told me to dress the boys light as you can easily out blankets over them if the get cold or remove when they are warm instead of trying to undress or put more clothes on while they are sleeping

1. It is different for everyone I think. I feed Joey one breast, then change him and then he feeds on the other side. If he goes again then I change him before putting him to bed so that he is comfortable.
2. I was told to alternate sides. For example if I start on the left.. he finishes one side completely, then I change him and then put him on the other si\de. He usually has a good long feed on that side too and empties it but I usually start him on the right side next time to make sure it was emptied properly etc. Does that make sense at all?? Sorry I am a bit out of it today!
3. I was told one layer more than I would wear... I usually have Joey wearing a body suit then an outfit ocver it. When he was tiny I also put a wollen singlet on him. You will definitely know if Hannah is too cold or hot. I was really worried at the start too. Oh and it is improtant to always put a hat on her when you go out, Joey wore one constantly for the first 4 weeks or so as they lose the most bodyheat through their heads...
Have to go. The little guy is SCREAMING!!! Hope this helps a bit!?

hi aimee, new bubs questions..awwww....i'm getting clucky!!!!
with jack i'd give him one side, change nap, then give him the other side. i never checked if he'd gone again, what a bad mum! for the next feed, i'd always start on the side i'd finished on last.
i was also told to put 1 extra layer on him than what i was wearing and when he was asleep he was wrapped then a blanket on top. but in saying that, he was born in august so it wasn't this hot! i think he mostly wore a bodysuit and t-shirt when it got warm and jersey on top if it got cooler.
good luck, just keep doing what your doing and never doubt yourself, do what you feel is right.

Hi Aimee
I feed Jacob one side, and offer other side. sometimes he takes it, other times not, but I was told to always start on that side next time, as it will be full from not being drunk, or half full, and its important that bubs drains breast to get full benefits. I pop a tissue under stap of my bra so i remember what side to start on. Also I change after feed, but if bub is sleepy, you could change after one side to wake her up a little.
As for clothes, it is really hot here in Blenners at the mo, so I am having issues with Jacob being too hot, but as a general rule, i think it is one more layer than you have on, and at bedtime i used to have a sleepsiut/stretch n grow and xtra blankies which I could take off/add according to temp. now he just sleeps in nappy and singlet, its very warm here at night.

I found it was best to change Chloe after a feed to avoid her being feed to sleep as it's best they learn to fall asleep on their own.
I always took turns with what side I started a feed on. Sometimes she wouldn't take the second side which was a big uncomfortable but after a week or so my milk supply ajusted to her feeding pattern which was a huge relief.
I found dressing chloe lighter and using blankets if needed was best. At this time of year I remember using a cotton singlet bodysuit thing and a stretch'n'grow. At night I found the best thing I would swear by is those extra long nighties with the ribbon at the bottom. I read that those are also good because baby can regulate their temperture better in one of those rather than in a stretch'n'grow.
Hope this helps, in the end it's just what works best for you. goodluck

When I was breastfeeding I was told by my midwife that when they first start drinking (at a feed) the first 3-4 minutes is "watery" milk and after that is all the milk with the "goodies" in it. So I kept this in mind and depending on how full I was on either side when I fed her determined whether I just gave her one side or most of one and some off the other to relieve me!!
- Have a paper and pen next to you when your feeding so you get an idea on how full you were b4 you started - if you gave her one side or both... and now im rambling!!
Nappy change, Arna usually cried for a feed so I'd feed her, change her, play and back to bed.
Clothes - as Jacks Mum said - usually an extra layer then you + a hat / beanie.
Take our advice and use what you think is relevant!!
All the best!! Being a new mum is fun ay!

Thanks so much guys Will try dressing her lighter and using blankets and hat - sounds much easier than bulking up with clothes. Everything is going quite well considering she only a few days old (better than I had thought it would actually) just these little things. We are heading over to Palmy soon to visit daniels mum in hospital (she hasnt met Hannah yet) so this will be interesting - our first outing!!

yep everything the others have said sounds like me. lol. it really depended on how hungry my girls were on whether they got the second side - for a long time there ayja built up my supply so that she would only need 1 side and be full to bursting with it, then have the next side at the next feed - other times she would have both sides if it hadn't been long enough between feeds and there wasn't much in either. the clothes thing - is 1 one more layer than you ahve on. as a rule i usually have a cotton singlet - then a silk-n-wool singlet, then bodysuit and a normal suit over that or just pants and cardi. now that it's getting a bit hotter it's didfferent - today we had a bbq at the daycare and by the time i got the girls home we were all so hot that ayja is in bed in a singlet and nappy and paris only has her nappy on.
with the changing thing - i would decide according to how wet or dirty their nappy was when i got them up - if it was ok then i would feed fully first and change afterwards... but at night, i would change first to wake them up properly, and then feed - i know its bad, but sometimes you just don't want to wake them up by changing them when they are all nice and dozy and milk drunk - i didn't feed them to sleep - just until they were dozy enough to go straight to sleep once in bed. lol

I really overdressed jake at first. He got heat rash. He is a hot boy, so he ended up having the same amount of clothing on as me, but one extra layer than his dad.

I have found from most of my friends as well as my own experience that bubs usually takes after one or the other when it comes to them feeling the heat or the cold most. I was lucky Chloe took after me in that way but when I was round visiting a friend who has just had her first and she kept going and saying to her hubby do you think it's too cold in here? She never feels the cold but her new son and hubby always seem to.

with newborns there is something in your milk which signals to their bowels too, so pooping during feeding is common too... if my bub poops during a feed i wait till i am finished cause sometimes he hasnt finished pooping anyway. it did mean too tho that he got changed about 3 times.
