Topic: Expressing question Posted: 10 November 2006 at 1:59pm |
Seems to be a few threads about expressing so thought i might be able to get a bit more info while its on everyones mind.
I have having to express my little guy wont latch, he is nearly three weeks and i do try him on the boob before each feed, sometimes we have a little luck, usually one feed a day, but i am determined at this point not to give up trying.
Any ways to get to the point, I current express after each feed i give him, for about 10 mins on each side and usually get at least 90mls a side, which is good as his bottle are about 90-100mls, but my question is, if i go out for the day how long can i go without expressing without it affecting my milk supply, not saying i want to go all day but the longest i ever go without expressing is when he has his longer sleep at night about 4.5hrs, other wise its about every 3 hours, i guess i am a little paranoind about my milk running out or something, its all very new and just want to do it right,

I'm a bit slack, in the beginning I was religious about expressing every 3 hours, but now I do it 4 hourly during the day, then at night I skip an express, so I express after their last feed before bed, then give them their next feed 3 hours later, then express after their next feed which works out to be 6-7 hours after I last expressed. I have discovered that if I leave it that long I just get way more at a go than if I do it every 3-4 hours.
I also leave the pump going for a few minutes after my breasts seem empty to stimulate supply, and I'm taking the Naturopharm Milk Med as well. If you can, try to keep one or two feeds ahead in the fridge and freeze the rest so that you have a bit up your sleeve.

I used to express after each bottle feed, but would generally miss 1 feed during the night, just so I could get some more sleep (hubby was great at getting up to give Amelia a bottle).
I also had HUGE problems with getting Amelia to latch - we spent a week in hospital (C-section) and came away still with BF unestablished. I would offer her the boob before each feed, but often she'd just end up screaming. When I went to the chiropractor, he said that because she'd put her head back while in labour, she would be getting headaches - turned out she had a wee problem with her neck, and the day after we had her to the chiro, she latched on NO problem!
Not sure how your labour went, but maybe you would like to get your wee man seen by a chiro or osteo?

should i just keep expressing till i'm empty each time or should i do a certain time each side, at the moment i mix and match a bit, but great that i can go about 6 hrs with out an express, i always plan to miss an express at night then panic that its not a good idea,
but anything to get a little extra sleep works for me,
thanks

Ifyou want to maintain/increase supply, express till you're empty. Are you using an electric pump coz if you plan to express for a while it might be worth getting one if you don't have one already. I hired mine.
I'm the same as Luna - I miss the night express so I can get a bit more sleep. If I express it takes an hour from the time the babies wake up to feed them both, change them, put them down, express and go back to bed. Oh and I have to put the pump in to sterilise as well. If I don't express I can have the babies back in bed and be back in bed myslef within half an hour.

Have you been to Family Centre? They are great with feeding probs, you go there for the day and they observe bubs feeding and help get them to latch properly.

I would recommend La Leache League or family centre - whoever are the "experts" where you live. Sometimes babies can do funny things with their necks or tongues and it just needs a little correcting in the early days.
Sorry you're having a tough time, hope it settles soon.

I expressed and bottle fed jaocb for 6 weeks, before i got him to feed off me. It was a very frustrating 6 weeks, but worth perservering. I had the help of a great lactation consukltant, as well as my midwife. The first time he fed off me properly felt like I has won lotto! I sued to express after every feed, even the night ones, as I had no supply at all, and was actually on medication for it, so was dead paranoid about loosing the little I had! sounds like you are getting enough, just rmember, when baby has a growth spurt, and feeds more, you will need to pump more too, to keep up your supply. I found eating almonds and oatmeal/porridge and drinking lots of water really helped as well. Good luck and good on you!

Your midwife can refer you to your local Family Centre.
